NFL Hands Down Punishment To Browns, Falcons For Violations

The NFL has suspended Browns GM Ray Farmer for the first four regular-season games of '15 and fined the team $250,000 for "impermissible texting during games," but the Browns "won't lose one of their 10 draft picks." Farmer's use of a cell phone during games was a "violation of the league's policy on the use of electronic devices." NFL Exec VP/Football Operations Troy Vincent said, "There was no evidence in the NFL's review that Browns ownership or any other team executives had knowledge of the prohibited conduct'' (CLEVELAND.com, 3/30).

Also today, the NFL said that it has fined the Falcons $350,000 and docked them a fifth-round pick in the '16 Draft for using pre-recorded crowd noise at the Georgia Dome in '13 and '14. The league said that former Falcons Event Marketing Dir Roddy White "was directly responsible for the violation." While team President Rich McKay was "unaware" of White’s activity, he will be suspended from the Competition Committee beginning April 1. He may petition NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for "reinstatement to the committee" after June 30 (AJC.com, 3/30).
