Maryland Athletic Department Ran $3.5M Operating Loss In '14

The Maryland athletic department had a $3.5M operating loss in FY '14, compared to $1.2M in '13, according to information presented today at a Board of Regents Finance Committee meeting. That brings the school's athletic losses to nearly $10M since '10. UM Vice Chancellor for Financial Affairs Bob Page said athletics "with almost near certainty" will not add to that deficit. This comes as the "first installment of Big Ten conference money is just starting to reach the university's athletic department" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 1/29).

Meanwhile, the UM men's basketball team will wear special new shoes for tonight's away game against Ohio State. The Under Armour design "commemorates important years in the basketball program's history." The year of the school's lone national title, 2002, "appears in large font and is flanked by a couple of stars." The words "Cole Field House, Terrapins, College Park and Maryland are featured" as well (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 1/28).
