Rockefeller Claims NFLPA Opposed Hearing On Domestic Violence

U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.), the chair of the Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee, chided an NFLPA counsel this afternoon, suggesting the union had opposed calling his hearing today on domestic violence and sports. The NFLPA in a tweet denied Rockefeller’s suggestion. The 90-minute hearing, scheduled to end at 4:00pm ET, includes witnesses from each of the big four sports leagues and respective unions. After NFLPA Special Counsel Teri Patterson finished testifying that the union wants the NFL to collectively bargain personal conduct, Rockefeller said the openness she wants was not evidenced by the resistance the committee received from her side to hold the hearing. Rockefeller did not comment after any other witness testified.

Patterson’s name only appeared on the witness list today. Yesterday, a press release from the committee that listed the witnesses also included the following line: “The National Football League Players’ Association refused to send a representative.” NFLPA Assistant Exec Dir of External Affairs George Atallah tweeted shortly after Rockefeller’s comment, “I am at the Senate hearings where @SenRockefeller suggested the NFLPA opposed holding this hearing. That is patently false.”
