CBC Announces C$130M In Cuts, No Longer Player For Pro Sports

CBC/Canada Radio today announced that they are “eliminating the equivalent of 657 full-time positions over the next two years.” The move is part of C$130M in budget cuts stemming from lower ad revenues and the loss of “HNIC.” The public broadcaster issued a statement that read in part, “We remain committed to signature events of national importance such as the Olympics.” But CBC President & CEO Hubert Lacroix told staff that the net “would no longer compete for the rights to broadcast professional sports” (THESTAR.com, 4/10).
