MLBAM Begins iBeacon Push With Installations In S.F., L.A.

MLB Advanced Media has completed installation of Apple’s iBeacon technology at Dodger Stadium and Petco Park, the first two of 30 installations planned for every MLB ballpark. The technology, using Bluetooth low energy (BLE) signals, operates on a different wireless spectrum than Wi-Fi or cellular signals and allows for highly targeted messaging to fans’ mobile devices at key points inside and outside ballparks.

MLBAM expects to have more than 20 MLB ballparks with full iBeacon installations in time for Opening Day. The iBeacon technology will be heavily incorporated into a forthcoming update of MLBAM’s At The Ballpark mobile app. Uses of iBeacon by MLBAM will range widely from park to park and incorporate exclusive video, coupons, fan loyalty programs, wayfinding and other implementations.
