ESPN's "The Price Of Gold" Revisits Harding-Kerrigan Scandal

ESPN tonight at 9:00pm ET will debut a new "30 for 30" documentary, "The Price Of Gold," about the Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan controversy around the '94 Lillehammer Games. Kerrigan appears in archival footage but "declined to be interviewed for the 90-minute film." The BOSTON HERALD's Mark Perigard writes, "Who can blame her? Why should she be forced to relive an assault that happened two decades ago?" (BOSTON HERALD, 1/16).

The N.Y. TIMES' Mike Hale writes director Nanette Burstein is "clear that the Harding-Kerrigan story is as much about class and its resentments as it is about sports." The film is a "crisp, smart, comprehensive account of the rivalry that dominated American women’s figure skating in the early 1990s." The DAILY BEAST's Amy Zimmerman: "While the strange story was a once in a lifetime scandal, the media circus it spawned has become commonplace." The Portland OREGONIAN's Kristi Turnquist writes the film is structured "like a tense detective thriller." VARIETY's Brian Lowry writes the documentary, "while interesting, leaves as many questions as it answers."
