David Stern Offers Bullish Comments On NBA Global Games

NBA Commissioner David Stern addressed the media in Shanghai on Friday ahead of a Warriors-Lakers exhibition game. Stern said the experience in China "has been great." Stern: "The fans are passionate, the coverage is terrific, the social media is buzzing." Stern added NBA Deputy Commissioner & COO Adam Silver returned from the Bulls-Wizards game in Rio and "reported that it was the same" there. Stern said of int'l preseason games as a whole, "All the buildings have been sold out, all the fans have been deeply engaged, all of our partners, both sponsors and television, have been very, very pleased. ... We couldn't be happier with the Global Games and we're very much looking forward to the two games we're playing in December in Mexico City and in January in London" (NBA.com, 10/18).

CBS' Seth Doane reporting from Beijing noted that "by the end of this season, the NBA will have put together almost 150 of these international games since 1978, their way of building the brand overseas." He also noted NBA viewership in China "grew 30 percent last year." Doane: "The NBA expects to see double-digit revenue growth every year here in China well into the future. Last year, it’s estimated they hauled in around $150 million in China alone" ("CBS This Morning," 10/18).
