NCAA Says It Will Not Renew Licensing Deal With EA Sports

The NCAA today announced that it has opted not to enter a new contract for the license of its name and logo for EA Sports' "NCAA Football" video game franchise. The current deal expires in June '14, but the recently released "NCAA Football 14" game will be the last to include the body's name and logo. The NCAA said in a statement it is "confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games," but it did acknowledge the "current business climate and costs of litigation" (NCAA). Read the full statement.

ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy reports EA Sports "will still have college football video game beyond 2014," but it "won't be affiliated" with the NCAA (TWITTER.com, 7/17).
