ABC Needs Big Game 7 Rating For NBA Finals Year-Over-Year Gain

ABC can expect a strong rating for tonight's Spurs-Heat Game 7, and the network will need it in order for this year’s NBA Finals to have a shot at improving over the five-game Heat-Thunder series last year. ABC heads into tonight’s game averaging a 9.7 final rating and 16.2 million viewers, down 4% in both metrics compared to '12. The Finals are also seeing year-over-year drops among males 18-34 (-12%), 18-49 (-7%) and 25-54 (-4%).

The last NBA Finals Game 7 was in '10, when Lakers-Celtics drew a 15.6 final rating and 28.2 million viewers, also airing on a Thursday night. The Spurs last played in a Game 7 in '05 against the Pistons, and the game drew an 11.9 final rating and 19.0 million viewers on a Thursday night.
