IOC's Evaluation Commission Begins Tour Of Istanbul This Weekend

The IOC's Evaluation Commission “arrives in Istanbul this weekend for a four-day tour to assess Istanbul's plans, finances and existing venues” in the city’s effort to host the ’20 Olympics. The panel, headed by IOC VP Craig Reedie, “has already visited Tokyo and Madrid.” Many of Istanbul's venues “will need to be constructed from scratch but Turkey sees this as an advantage, not a setback.” Turkey has also “expressed an interest” in hosting the ’20 UEFA Championships, “which would weaken its Olympic bid.” However, Turkey Youth & Sports Minister Suat Kilic said that Turkey was “putting its full weight” behind hosting the Olympics. Istanbul tried previously for the ‘00, ‘04, ‘08 and ‘12 Olympics (AP, 3/22).
