The NHL and NHLPA met separately today in N.Y. with a federal mediator, but face-to-face negotiations have yet to be scheduled. A league source said that a meeting between the two sides could possibly happen tonight, but optimism for substantial talks this weekend was low. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has set a deadline of Jan. 11 to complete a collective bargaining agreement in order to begin a 48-game regular season in two weeks.
