The Islanders hosted an open skate at Nassau Coliseum yesterday that resulted in four full trucks of donated clothing items for Island Harvest, a local charity, along with more than $4,000 in cash donations. More than 2,500 fans attended the event, which will benefit the efforts of the Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy victims on Long Island. Over the next week, the Islanders are also holding an online auction on their team website to benefit the Red Cross. The team has received donations from every sports franchise in the N.Y. metropolitan area, plus Barclays Center and Madison Square Garden.
