NBC To Release More Of Bob Costas' Interview With Jerry Sandusky

A new portion of Bob Costas' interview with Jerry Sandusky will be released on NBC's "Nightly News" tonight, "Rock Center" exec producer Rome Hartman told THE DAILY this afternoon. Costas spent 15-20 minutes on the phone with the former Penn State assistant football coach, who is at the center of a child sex abuse scandal. Last night's clip on "Rock Center" was on-air less than 10 minutes. New material from the interview also was included on "Today" this morning. Extended excerpts of the phone interview will air tonight on Versus' "NBC Sports Talk."

Neither Sandusky nor his attorney, Joseph Amendola, placed any conditions on Costas' interview, Hartman said. No limits were placed on the length of the interview, whether Sandusky would be interviewed by phone or who would conduct the interview, Hartman said. "Bob has been pursuing an interview all week long, and was hoping to work with him for a story on 'Rock Center' last night," Hartman said. Sandusky's attorney did not demand to sit in the studio with Costas, Hartman said. "It was a natural thing," he said. "The lawyer was here in New York, and we got Sandusky on the phone."

“Rock Center” averaged 4.5 million viewers in the 10:00-11:00pm ET window, along with a 1.3 rating among people 18-49, which is the show's best mark in that demo since its premiere. By comparison, ABC’s “20/20” led that window with 13.4 million viewers and a 2.8 rating among people 18-49 for Diane Sawyer's interview with U.S. congresswomen Gabby Giffords.
