The Kings' announcement this morning to keep the team in town put pressure squarely on Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and local officials to develop a new arena plan, according to a statement released today by the team. “We look forward to seeing Mayor Johnson bring his vision to reality,” the statement read. “However, if an arena plan cannot be finalized in a timely fashion, the NBA’s relocation committee has assured Maloof Sports and Entertainment that it will support an application to move the franchise to another market starting in 2012-13.”

Johnson said in a press conference earlier today that he will meet with the Maloof family this week to plot out a new arena development strategy. “We are going to find a way to get it done,” Johnson said. “The eyes of the NBA are watching us.” Johnson added that the Maloofs want to see a “clear path to funding” a new arena by March 1. “We are not under the illusion that if we don’t get it by March that we will have another chance,” he said.
