NC STATE COACH SPORTS UNDER ARMOUR HATINSTEAD OF ADIDAS

North Carolina State Univ.football coach Chuck Amato, whoseteam has an apparel deal with adidas, on Saturday donned an Under Armour buckethat while it rained during the final three periods of his team’s game against Maryland, which has anapparel deal with Under Armour. The ABCcrew that called the game – Mike Tirico,Terry Bowden and Tim Brant – repeatedly joked aboutAmato’s appearance, accompanied by several close-ups of the coach, giving theUnder Armour logo on his hat much exposure.

NC State Senior Associate AD David Horning told The Daily, “It was an inadvertent mistake by one of our equipmentmanagers. That was one of his hats thathe’s had for about five years. … He put it on and didn’t even realize it. …I’ve already talked to adidas and apologized to them.”


WTA TOUR INKS FIVE-YEAR PACT WITH TOMGROUP FOR CHINA

The WTA Tour today announceda five-year partnership with the China-based TOM Group for the rights to sellmarketing and sponsorship packages for the tour in the Asia-Pacificregion. The deal includes the rights touse the WTA Tour logo and player names and likenesses in tour-relatedpromotions. Additionally, TOM Groupobtains exclusive regional broadcast and Internet rights (WTA Tour).

SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNALreports that TOM Group “plans to sell the rights to one of its clients. So while the sponsorship grants net-postsignage at the WTA’s 15 Asia-Pacific tournaments next year, what brand will beon the signs is not known yet.” WTA TourVP/Business Affairs Andrew Walker:“This will increase the exposure of women’s tennis in China. This is the tour’s first strategicsponsorship in China”(SPORTSBUSINESSJOURNAL, 10/18 issue).


FOX PREPARED TO USE FX IF LCS GAMESOVERLAP TONIGHT

Fox tonight will broadcastYankees-Red Sox ALCS Game Five at 5:00pm ET, followed by Cardinals-Astros NLCSGame Five at 8:00pm ET. With the ALCSgames averaging nearly four hours through its four games, and the shortest gameat 3:15, some overlap appears likely. FXwill be employed by the net if overlap does occur (THE DAILY).

Meanwhile, USA TODAY notesthat the plan is to keep the roof open for the Cardinals-Astros game. Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, Astros manager PhilGarner and team and Fox execs “were consulted about the decision. Astros Owner Drayton McLane was worried about temperature in the 80s affectingfans, and TV officials were concerned about shadows” (USA TODAY, 10/18).


PBS’ “AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: THE FIGHT”MOSTLY LAUDED

PBS tonight at various timesdepending on the market will debut “American Experience: The Fight,” a90-minute documentary examining the events leading up to the 1938 bout between Max Schmeling and Joe Louis. SI.com’s RichardDeitsch wrote “The Fight” is a “compelling examination of two men whopersonified the ideological struggle of the time” (SI.com, 10/8).

In N.Y., Adam Buckman writesit “represents documentary filmmaking at its very best. Using meticulously chosen period newsreelsand the testimony of experts – from historians, who have studied the era fromthe vantage point of the present day, to witnesses who knew the combatants andsaw them fight – ‘The Fight’ brings the 1930s vividly to life” (N.Y. POST, 10/18).

Also in N.Y., David Bianculliwrites the film “makes the case that the [bout] was the match of the ages. But the [documentary] doesn’t quite make itscase. …. It’s still worth watching, especially for boxing fans” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/18).

In Chicago, Ted Cox wrote the documentary “is sogood it’s apt to leave sports aficionados as enraptured as loyal PBSdonors. In short, ‘The Fight,’ … is justabout the perfect sports documentary” (ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD, 10/15).

In Denver, Dusty Saunders writes the film“covers familiar ground showing how history tied these heavyweights together,the documentary puts events into a fascinating context – for boxing and historyfans” (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 10/18).


MAY, WALSH AND SORENSTAM NAMEDSPORTSWOMEN OF THE YEAR

The Women’s Sports Foundationwill host its 25th annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner& Auction tonight at 6:00pm ET at the Waldorf-Astoria in N.Y. MistyMay, Kerri Walsh and Annika Sorenstam will be honored as the’04 Sportswomen of the Year, while jockey JulieKrone will receive the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award. Figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi will receive the Flo Hyman Memorial Award (Women’s Sports Foundation).

BASS today announced that itwill move its headquarters to Celebration, Florida, near the Walt Disney World Resortin ’05. The announcement follows OsceolaCounty Commission’s approval of incentives to lure BASS (BIZJOURNALS.com, 10/18).

The NationalSports Museumtoday announced the hiring of Octagon to help the venue, which will open inSummer ’06, land corporate partners (National Sports Museum).

The AFL today formallyannounced that Las Vegas’ Thomas & Mack Centerwill host ArenaBowl XIX on June 12, 2005 (AFL).

The NFL today announced thata record 14.5 million unique users logged on to the NFL Internet Network duringSeptember. The previous best was 13.9million in December ‘03 (NFL).

DisneyHand, the worldwideoutreach for Walt Disney, and Disney Publishing Worldwide will donate more than160,000 books to NBA teams, which will be distributed to schools and youthorganizations throughout the season (NBA).

The Sun Belt Conference todayannounced a sponsorship agreement with New Balance, providing the company withexposure on conference telecasts, signage at conference championship games andother considerations (Sun Belt Conference).
