CUBS TAP LEVY RESTAURANTS TO REPLACE ARAMARK AT WRIGLEY

By Don Muret, Staff Writer, SportsBusiness Journal

The Chicago Cubs selected Levy Restaurants to take over the food concessions at Wrigley Field from Aramark starting in 2005, according to industry sources. Levy already services the ballpark’s suites and Stadium Club eatery. The contract going forward includes a multi-million dollar capital investment at the 90-year-old facility. Sportservice, the longtime concessionaire across town at U.S. Cellular Field, was among the other bidders for the all-inclusive Cubs deal, proposing a joint venture with the city’s popular Harry Caray’s Restaurant.

Meanwhile, the Aramark BOD today announced that President & CEO William Leonard has stepped down from his posts and resigned from the board, effective immediately. The board named Exec Chair Joseph Neubauer Chair and CEO, a role he held from ’84-03. Neubauer has agreed to serve in the three roles for at least three years (THE DAILY).

TODAY’S ARTICLES OF INTEREST

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE’s Philip Hersh writes acting USOC CEO Jim Scherr’s “quiet efficiency has cleaned up the malodorous muck left by the influence-peddling mess that led to the 2003 resignations of the USOC's top volunteer official, President Marty Mankamyer, and top salaried official, CEO Lloyd Ward.” Scherr has “kept the USOC running smoothly through the six congressional investigations and major restructuring provoked by the leadership scandal” (CHICAGO TRIBUNE).

The WASHINGTON TIMES’ Bob Cohn writes of Univ. of Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen, “He is everywhere. His mug is plastered on a 20-foot billboard attached to a truck. He exhorts a supposedly fictitious team but clearly his own red-clad Terps in a nationally aired commercial for the Under Armour apparel company. … Season ticket sales have climbed from less than 18,000 in 2000, the last year B.F. (before Friedgen), to more than 31,000” (WASHINGTON TIMES).
