NIKE ANNOUNCES ANNUAL MARATHON FOR WOMEN TO BE RUN IN S.F.

Niketoday announced the launch of Nike 26.2, a marathon and half-marathon for womento be run in S.F. on October 24. Theannual event, which will be the first U.S. marathon exclusively for women, willbenefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Nike 26.2 is inspired by the 20th anniversary of JoanBenoit Samuelson’s marathon victory at the ’84 Olympics, the first Olympicmarathon for women. Samuelson andactress Emily Proctor of “CSI: Miami” will serve as ambassadors for theevent (Nike).


RAVENS, 49ERS, EAGLES REACH COMPROMISE ON TERRELL OWENS

Priorto NFL special master Stephen Burbank’s ruling on the case of TerrellOwens, the Ravens, 49ers and Eagles today reached a compromise under whichOwens will become a member of the Eagles. The NFL Management Council and the NFLPA facilitated the settlement (Ravens).


SAN DIEGO STATE, PADRES TO OFFER SPORTS MANAGEMENT MBA

San Diego State Univ. and the Padres today formally announced thatthey are partnering to offer a customizedMBA with a specialization in sports management beginning in January‘05. As part of the program, the Padreswill create internships in their front office and at Petco Park. Club executives will also serve as guestspeakers. The university plans to capenrollment at 30 for the program’s first class (San Diego State).


CUTTER & BUCK CUTS Q3 LOSS BY 91%; WILL BEGIN QUARTERLY DIVIDEND

TheSEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER reports that Cutter & Buck “cut itsthird-quarter loss by 91[%] and said yesterday that it would begin a quarterlydividend and stock-repurchase program.” The company reported a loss of $900,000 for the quarter that endedJanuary 31, compared with a loss of $9.7M for the same three-month period ayear earlier. A dividend of $0.05 ashare “will be payable April 9 to shareholders on record as of March 26” (SEATTLEPOST-INTELLIGENCER, 3/16).

Harris Corp. and CBS today announced an agreement under whichHarris will sponsor high-def coverage of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament,including the Final Four and Championship games. Coverage will include 12 broadcasts: eight regional and fournational (CBS).

College Sports Television today announced that is has completedits acquisition of the Official College Sports Network, which will bere-branded CollegeSports.com. Inaddition to the Web site, CollegeSports.com offers a network of 150 officialathletic Web sites (CSTV).

IMAX and Warner Bros. today announced that “NASCAR 3D: The IMAXExperience” grossed $1.47M during its opening three-day weekend. The film, which opened in a record 68theaters, set the record for both the highest-grossing opening weekend for anIMAX originally produced film and the highest per-screen average for an IMAX 3Dfilm with $21,579 (IMAX).

Mexicanbeer Tecate today announced that it has selected Strategic Sports Group as itssports marketing agency of record. SSGwill focus primarily on the growth and development of Copa Tecate, a grassrootssoccer tournament that last year featured more than 3,600 teams (Tecate).

USATriathlon today announced that it has selected Adrenalin Design Group todevelop a comprehensive branding system for the organization. After updating the primary mark anddeveloping a secondary mark in ’03, Adrenalin will now focus on a number oftertiary marks (USA Triathlon).

NFLNetwork today announced that it will televise 22 games from the ’04 NFL Europeseason, beginning April 3 at 8:00pm ET with Amsterdam Admirals-Frankfurt Galaxy(NFL Network).

SAStoday announced that MLBAM has selected the company’s Marketing Automationsoftware to perform various back-end functions. The software includes reporting capabilities and predictiveanalytics (SAS).

America’sSports Voice, the parent company of Milagro Entertainment, today announced thatit has completed three new treatments for TV shows that are now ready to beshopped to network or cable television. One of the shows, “Gasoline Alley,” is a one-hour drama based on theinner-workings of NASCAR (America’s Sports Voice).

TheASPEN DAILY NEWS reports that Aspen Skiing Co. is “pouring $10[M] into majorcapital improvements for next ski season, including new chairlifts on AspenMountain and Buttermilk and a renovation of Merry-Go-Round Restaurant at AspenHighlands” (ASPENDAILY NEWS, 3/16).

TheAP reports that British pole-vaulter Janine Whitlock lost her appealtoday against a lifetime Olympic doping ban. Whitlock was “suspended for two years by UK Athletics after testingpositive for the anabolic steroid methandienone in June 2002” (AP, 3/16).

DAILY VARIETY reports that French satellite broadcaster TPS hasspent an estimated $30M to win the rights to “U.K. First Division soccer forthe next three seasons from bigger rival Canal Plus.” Canal Plus paid an estimated $12M for a deal in ’01. TPS has 1.2 million subscribers (DAILYVARIETY, 3/16).
