MARLINS HOPING FOR 60,000 FOR TODAY’S NLDS GAME THREE

Giants-Marlins NLDS Game Three begins today at 4:00pm ET atPro Player Stadium, and the MIAMI HERALD reports that as of yesterday the team“had sold close to 60,000tickets” for the game and “nearly 55,000 for Saturday’s Game 4. The crowds will easily surpass attendancefor the Marlins’ division playoff games against the Giants in 1997, which drew42,167 and 41,283.” The Marlins willsell “up to about 67,500 tickets for the games today and Saturday” (MIAMIHERALD, 10/3).

The Ft.Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL reports that a work force of 2,800 to 3,000 will be on hand for the game, “up fromthe 1,500 to 2,000 who staff regular-season games, which drew an average of16,290 fans this season, and had several shuttered concession stands,particularly in the underused outfield areas” (Ft.Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL, 10/3).


NBA TODAY ANNOUNCES EIGHT CORPORATE SPONSORS FOR MEXICO

The NBA today announced the eight corporate sponsors thatwill present the Jazz-Mavericks exhibition game October 5 at Palacio de losDeportes in Mexico City. The groupincludes American Airlines, Banamex, Corona, Deportes Marti, Gatorade,Spalding, Sprite and Telcel. The gamewill be broadcast live by TV Azteca in Mexico, and by NBA TV in the U.S. (NBA).


FRONTIER AIRLINES TODAY INKS DEALS WITH FOUR CO SCHOOLS

Frontier Airlines today announced that it has signed fourseparate agreements with the athletics programs of the Air Force Academy,Colorado State Univ., the Univ. of Denver and the Univ. of NorthernColorado. The agreements vary in termsof length, but each calls for Frontier to receive stadium and arena signage,participate in in-game promotions, receive logo and ad placement in universitypublications and have access to joint promotion opportunities (FrontierAirlines).


HERB BROOKS TO BE FEATURED TONIGHT ON CSTV’S “COACH”

CSTV tonight will debut its latest original series, “Coach,”at 7:00pm ET, which profiles college coaches from the perspective of theirformer players. Tonight’s 30-minutepremiere focuses on late hockey coach Herb Brooks. Mike Eruzione, captain of the ’80U.S. Olympic hockey team, will host the show, which features interviews fromseveral of Eruzione’s “Miracle on Ice” teammates and Brooks’ son. The net will also premiere its collegehockey coverage tonight, with Saint Lawrence-Miami (OH) at 8:00pm (CTSV).

In L.A., Larry Stewart wrote that the special “is aremarkable production for a start-up network” (L.A.TIMES, 10/1).

In Pittsburgh, Chuck Finder wrote, “It’s a slick,graphically pleasing, relatively seamless portrayal. A step up from Fox’s effort, but still a notch below HBO’s” (PITTSBURGHPOST-GAZETTE, 10/2).


BUZZER BEATERS

B&T reports that Melbourne-based agency Smart Creative “has won the adidas account”for the region. The move “comes justmonths after the sporting manufacturer split with former agency Whybin TBWAafter reports that tensions between the client and agency had reached boilingpoint.” Clemenger BBDO, DDB andBrandhouse Arnold “were among the other agencies vying for the business” (B&T, 10/3).

The Web Marketing Association awarded Prince Tennis’ Web site with its “BestSports Website” award (Prince Tennis).


A LIGHTER BUZZ

The N.Y. TIMES notes that while Bruce Springsteenconcludes his 14-month tour tonight and tomorrow night at Shea Stadium, “thetradition among fans of preparing for the show with a hibachi and a cooler ofbeer ended last week somewhere near Milwaukee, his last stop before Queens andthe city’s open-container laws.” Following Wednesday night’s show, one concertgoer said, “You have tohide the drink in a cup. … It was a complete joke. I felt like I was in high school again” (N.Y. TIMES, 10/3).

NBC will air the Breeders’ Cup preview program from4:30-6:00pm ET, which will feature live racing from Belmont, Keeneland RaceCourse and Santa Anita Park. The NHL and EA Sports will conduct an “NHL 2004” tournamentfor gamers at select Game Stop and Electronics Boutique retail stores in 12 NHLmarkets. Winners proceed through thetournament to the NHL All-Star Weekend for the “NHL 2004 Global Championships.”

“NASCAR on NBC” analyst Wally Dallenbach will returnto competitive racing for this weekend’s Busch Series Mr. Goodcents 300 atKansas Speedway, driving the Mr. Clean AutoDry Carwash racecar in the firstrace of a five-race sponsorship package.

The Sports Hall of Fame of NJ will induct its eleventh classat halftime of the Dolphins-Giants 1:00pm ET game at Giants Stadium. Former Giants GM George Young isamong the inductees.
