NIKE WILL LAUNCH FIRST FOOTBALL-THEMED ADS IN TWO YEARS

The Portland OREGONIAN reports that Nike is launching an adcampaign around the NFL next month, and the TV spots will be “the first onesfocusing on football in at least two years” (PortlandOREGONIAN, 9/5).

MULTICHANNEL NEWS cites a Knowledge Networks study whennoting that the NFL and NASCAR are “best at leveraging their fan relationshipsinto tangible value for [TV] advertisers.” While 46% of NASCAR fans are “likely to say that ads in sports are ‘animportant information source for products they are interested in,’” 41% of NFLfans responded the same (MULTICHANNEL NEWS, 9/5).


LAMBEAU TO BE DEDICATED PRIOR TO SUNDAY’S HOME OPENER

The Vikings visit the Packers on Sunday in what will be thefirst game at the renovated Lambeau Field, and in St. Paul, Charley Waltersreports, “For Sunday’s dedication, there will be appearances by former Packers PaulHornung, Bart Starr and Reggie White, and NFL Commissioner PaulTagliabue.”  The 32-month, $295Mrenovation project has increased capacity by 11,500 seats, to a total of 72,515(ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 9/5). The AP notes the facility now has 166 luxury suites priced at up to$115,000 per year, as well as 6,000 club seats at up to $250 per game (AP,9/5). 


BANK HOPES GRASS IS GREENER, INKS FORMER WIMBLEDON CHAMP

The FINANCIAL TIMES reports Netherlands-based bank ABM Amrowas set to announce today that it has hired tennis player Richard Krajicek“to promote a cross-boarder financial service targeting high-earning Europeanathletes.” The company has 300 athlete clients and “expect[s] to sign up about500 in a couple of years,” and it “hopes Mr. Krajicek’s fame and contacts willwin clients” (FINANCIAL TIMES, 9/5).  


CHEVY & WARNER TEAMING UP FOR MUSICAL WEEKEND IN RICHMOND

With NASCAR’s Busch and Winston Cup Series in Richmond thisweekend, six Chevy Monte Carlo entries in Saturday’s Winston Cup Chevy Rock& Roll 400 and one Monte Carlo entry in tonight’s Busch Series Funai 250will carry special paint schemes promoting Warner Music Group artists.  The following presents with which cars thebands will be aligned (Warner Music Group):

Jesel Racing’s No. 26 High Life Dodge driven by Chad Blountwill feature a paint scheme resembling that of Bobby Allison’s No. 22 MillerHigh Life car in ’83.  The car will usethe paint scheme in seven of the remaining Busch Series races (Miller HighLife).


BUZZER BEATERS

The London GUARDIAN reports that in the first round ofbidding for the Premier League highlight package, ITV is “believed to havetabled a bid of about [US$15.9M], while Telewest bid [US$11.1M].”  BSkyB is also bidding for the package (LondonGUARDIAN, 9/5).

ESPN todayannounced that it has entered an agreement with EchoStar Communications and itsDISH Network for EchoStar to distribute ESPN HD.  Beginning September 16, DISH Network will make ESPN HD availableto its entire HD-enabled subscriber base (ESPN).

The Raptors todayannounced that they have signed a five-year deal for Coca-Cola’s Sprite brandto be the presenting sponsor of the Raptors Invitational Tournament.  This year’s tournament will be held October24-26 (Raptors).

The Titans todayannounced that the club will install FieldTurf at their Baptist Sports Parktraining facility in Nashville (Titans).

The CALGARY SUNreports that 9,750 Flames season tickets have been sold, “already 300 ahead ofthe number that were sold last year at the beginning of the season.”  Additionally, “half of the ticket packagesare gone, suites are sold out and large wait lists exist for suites that maybecome vacant” (CALGARY SUN, 9/5).

The DETROIT NEWSreports that MI State Univ. will wear throwback uniforms during Saturday’s 3:40CT game against Rutgers at Spartan Stadium, the school’s 1,000thgame  (DETROIT NEWS, 9/5).

The DENVER POSTreports that John Elway’s Ford Expedition has been recovered, afterbeing stolen from the Coeur d’Alene (ID) Municipal Airport in late August (DENVER POST, 9/5).

Dick Enberg this afternoon during CBS' coverage of theU.S. Open asked analyst John McEnroe of the line call-verifying"DuPont Mac Cam," "You ever get in an argument with that? Are you in sync with it?"  McEnroe: "It's my cam.  I'm notallowed to argue with that."  Enberg: "Maybe it gets in a badmood, I don't know."  McEnroe joked, "It does if I don't mentionDuPont" (CBS, 9/5).

Friday

The Bengals will host a tailgate kickoff party at 5:00pmET.  Cincinnati Mayor Charlie Luken,Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, and former Bengals Anthony Munez and IckeyWoods are scheduled to participate.

The Braves will host Clark Howard Buck Night duringthe team’s games against the Pirates tonight and tomorrow at Turner Field.  All 4,114 Upper Pavilion seats are availablefor $1.

The Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association will holdits 18th Annual Awards dinner and program at Walmac Int’l outside ofLexington, KY.

The Expos begin their final seven home games at HiramBithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with a three-game series against theMarlins through Sunday, and a four-game set with the Cubs beginningMonday.  The Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINELreports that the Marlins-Expos series “will have a different look” on FSN, asthe net will “use Deportes 13’s local feed and graphics.  There will be no Fox box or standard transitionalelements.  The score will appear in abox in the lower right-hand corner. There will be no pregame shows” (Ft. The ’03 Naismith Memorial Basketball HOF class will beinducted at a 5:00pm ET enshrinement ceremony. Included in the class are late Lakers announcer Chick Hearn,former Lakers F James Worthy and former Celtics C Robert Parish.  NBA TV will televise the enshrinementbeginning at 7:30pm ET.

Saturday

Bruce Springsteen will perform at Fenway Park,becoming the “first person to play a major rock concert” at the venue (USATODAY, 9/4).

The 49ers will host their 4th Annual Out ForBlood drive beginning at 9:00am PT. 49ers players, alumni and the Gold Rush Cheerleaders are scheduled toparticipate.

Cal Ripken Jr. will be inducted into the Orioles Hallof Fame during a 6:30pm ET ceremony prior to the team’s 7:05pm ET game againstthe Mariners.  Additionally, Orioles PRDir Bob Brown will receive the Herb Armstrong Award for distinguishedservice by non-uniformed personnel.

Sunday

WCBS’ Duke Castiglione launches his new weekly show“Sports From the Roundtable” at 11:00am ET.

The Blue Jays will host Dog’s Day at SkyDome prior to theteam’s 1:05pm ET game against the Tigers. A special seating area in the right field bleachers will accommodate 250dogs and 700 fans for the game. Additionally, participants will be invited to take part in an on-fieldparade.

Magic Johnson will host an invitation-only luncheonat 3:00pm PT to unveil his True School Authentic Jersey Collection at theViceroy Hotel in Santa Monica.  DanMarino, Joe Namath, Tracy McGrady, Dennis Rodman and SamuelL. Jackson are among those expected to attend.
