DA SAYS CERTAIN RECORDS WILL NOT IMPEDE RIGHT TO FAIR TRIAL

The AP reports that Eagle County DA Mark Hurlbert today said that prosecutors in the Kobe Bryant case “will not appeal a judge’s order to release some of the sealed court records,” saying that the documents slated for release “would not threaten Bryant’s right to a fair trial or the privacy rights” of the accuser. Meanwhile, the attorney representing media organizations, Chris Beall said that his clients will decide by Tuesday whether to appeal the judge’s decision, as “more detailed documents, including the arrest affidavit and search warrant, were to remain sealed” (AP, 8/28).

The L.A. TIMES reports that the financial impact of the case on Eagle County “is expected to be negligible.” The county budget is about $100M, with more than $40M in reserves. Legal experts “estimate that the cost of a trial could climb to $1[M] or more, far less than [other] high-profile trials” (L.A. TIMES, 8/28).

TODAY’S ARTICLES OF INTEREST

The FINANCIAL TIMES’ Adrian Michaels writes of Deutsche Bank’s sponsorship of this weekend’s PGA Tour event outside Boston, “The German bank feels it is ready to launch its name in the U.S. Being America, it has chosen to do so on a golf course. … The sponsorship will be accompanied by TV advertising, the bank’s first in the U.S., as it attempts to put its name on a footing with its largest Wall Street rivals” (FINANCIAL TIMES).

The Portland OREGONIAN’s Mike Tokito wrote, “When The Golf Channel was preparing to debut eight years ago, more than a few people were skeptical. … But on [January 17, 1995] when co-founders Arnold Palmer and [Joe] Gibbs flipped the ‘on’ switch in the network’s Orlando, Fla., studios, it started a cable phenomenon that not only has given golf fans blanket coverage of the sport, but also has become a role model for other niche networks. This week, the network takes another big step when it broadcasts its first major, the Jeld-Wen Tradition” (Portland OREGONIAN).

The N.Y. TIMES’ Stuart Elliot writes of Foot Locker’s revamped advertising and marketing campaign for three of its retail chains, “The campaigns, running since last week, replace price-based promotional ads with pitches that played up the brand images of the chains. They are indicative of the steps most big retailers are taking to spur consumer demand after a miserable back-to-school season last year, which was followed by a sluggish spring” (N.Y. TIMES).
