PROMOTION OFTHE WEEK: GIRLS NIGHT OUT TONIGHT AT PNC PARK

ThePirates tonight will host Girls Night Out prior to the team’s 7:05pm ET gameagainst the Marlins on the Adecco Deck at PNC Park. Beginning at 5:30pm, a dozen Saks Fifth Avenue representativeswill provide complimentary skin, makeup and hair consultations to any woman inattendance, the first 300 of whom will receive a complimentary gift bag of Saksproduct samples. Additionally, womenmay enter a drawing for various prizes, including Saks gift baskets and anin-game makeover. The winner of themakeover will have her before-and-after photos featured on the stadium’sJumbotron during the game.

PiratesDir of Promotions & Advertising Rick Orienza told The Dailythat the program, now in its third year and second as a monthly Wednesdayevent, is an important aspect of the team’s outreach to female fans. Orienza: “We’re finding that two-thirds ofthe women who attend these events are existing or current Pirates fans and theevent is a value-add for them. Theother third are first-time fans that have never been to a Pirates game. … It’sa nice way to introduce Pirates baseball to a very important demographic.” More Orienza: “Women are becoming moreimportant in terms of making the purchase decision as to how often and when toattend baseball games.”

ThePirates are averaging 21,465 fans through 63 home games this season, slightlyhigher than their Wednesday average of 20,363. However, this season’s four previous Girls Night Out promotions haveattracted an average of 23,590. WhileOrienza said that specific numbers for the event are difficult to calculate, the 300 gift bags generally are distributed within the first 15 minutes of theevent. Orienza: “Obviously, thispromotion does not have the overall impact of a fireworks night or a bobbleheadnight, but in terms of targeting a specific audience, it is a really nicepromotion.” Orienza added that he hasreceived calls from several other organizations within MLB about the promotion.

ThePirates advertise the event in the same manner as other promotions through thestandard channels: in-park, Web site, radio and TV. Targeted print ads specifically touting the promotion have beenrunning for the past seven to ten days. In addition, the Pirates send a monthly Saks gift bag to all femalemembers of the Pittsburgh media with information about the upcoming event.

TODAY’S ARTICLES OF INTEREST

TheDETROIT FREE PRESS’ Drew Sharp writes, “William Clay Fordenters his 40th season assole owner of the Lions, but theanniversary isn’t cause for celebration. Ford’s stewardship stands as a monument to Murphy’s Law – whatever cango wrong, will. Just give it time. …Ford’s 40-year reign is best described as equal parts bad luck and baddecisions. He hired head coaches nobodyelse wanted – before they came to the Lions and after he fired them. He remained outside of the league networkand had little knowledge of the up-and-coming front-office talent that builtstrong teams elsewhere. All the while, the Lions flirted with mediocrity” (DETROIT FREE PRESS).

TheCOLUMBUS DISPATCH’s Barnet Wolf writes of Nationwide’s sponsorship of the PGATour’s development tour, “Nationwideis expected to spend more than $6[M] a year – in excess of $30[M] over itsfive-year contract – on toursponsorship and advertising. That’sa big commitment, but less than 10[%] of the company’s $100[M] a year marketingbudget. Company officials say, however, the price is still less than it would be to target this audience without a linkwith the developmental tour” (COLUMBUS DISPATCH).
