AD SPENDING REPORT TABS SPANISH LANGUAGE TV AS TOPGAINER

U.S.ad spending is expected to rise 4.3% to $124.7B next year, according to aforecast issued today by TNS Media Intelligence/CMR at an Ad Age conference inN.Y.  The report says that the firsthalf of ‘04 will show a 4.7% growth increase, with 4% predicted for that year’ssecond half.  Fueling ‘04 ad spending,the report said, will be political spending, the continuing rise of Hispanicmedia as an advertising force and spending behind big brands.  Spanish language TV was forecast as the topgainer for ‘04 at 16.9% growth, while Internet (7.4%), cable TV (7.2%),consumer magazines (5.4%) radio (4.9%) B-to-B magazines (3.6%), outdoor (3.3%),network TV (2.8%) and newspapers (2.1%) also are expecting gains.  The mid-year forecast saw ‘04 growthopportunities in product placement, in-theater advertising and out-of-homeadvertising.


ACC PRESIDENTS TO CONDUCT FIFTH EXPANSION CALL TONIGHT

TheBOSTON GLOBE reports that the ACC’s Council of Presidents, which hasheld “four conference calls over the last two weeks and failed to come upwith the necessary seven votes to approve expansion to 12 teams, will hold yetanother call today” at 5:30pm ET.  The presidents will consider aproposal from Rutgers AD Robert Mulcahy where “the Big Eastwould offer up Miami if the ACC would not raid the Big East of any other teamsin the future.”  In exchange, the fiveBig East schools suing the ACC would drop the lawsuit (BOSTONGLOBE, 6/24).

FloridaAG Charlie Crist today said that he is “prepared to intervene onbehalf” of Miami in the aforementioned lawsuit.  Crist:“Universities have the right to join any conference that invites them.  The law does not compel Miami, or anyinstitution, to rebuff a legitimate overture, as long as existing contractualobligations are satisfied” (AP,6/24).


FOX TODAY REPORTS ITS NASCAR SEASON RATINGS AVERAGE

Foxtoday reported that its third season of NASCAR Winston Cup averaged a 5.8/14Nielsen rating, equal to the previous two seasons.  Fox notes the war in Iraq contributed to ratings drops for theNCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (-23% on CBS), NHL regular season (-21% onABC) and NBA regular season (-10% on ABC). The net’s four pre-war races posted year-to-year increases, as did thefinal three races in June.  The seasonaverage is based on a fast national for Sunday’s Dodge/Save Mart 350 (THEDAILY).


WINSTON CUP PEPSI 400 NEWS & NOTES: INDEMAND, MARSHALLS

iNDemand today announced that it will offer a freepreview of the NASCAR In Car package during the July 5 Winston Cup Pepsi 400 atDaytona Int’l Speedway.  The race marksthe halfway point of the season, as well as the package’s availability for thehalf-season rate of $89 (THE DAILY).

Bucs DT Warren Sapp and model Angie Everhartwill serve as the Grand Marshals for the race (THE DAILY).

Eastman Kodak and Walt Disney today announced a jointpromotion of “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” for therace, as part of a “wrap” touting the movie will adorn the No. 4 Pontiac andappear on driver Stacey Compton’s suit (THE DAILY).


BUZZER BEATERS

The CHARLOTTE BUSINESS JOURNAL reports that Save MartSupermarkets “has signed a multi-year agreement to continue as title sponsor ofthe annual NASCAR Winston Cup event” at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA.  Save Mart has been either the title orco-title sponsor of the event since ’92 (BIZJOURNALS.com,6/24).

The London TELEGRAPH reports that Princess Annewill be one of the directors of London’s bid for the ‘12 Olympics as “one ofthe non-executive directors on the bid committee” alongside British Olympic AssociationChair Craig Reedie and rower Matthew Pinsent.  The bid committee will be comprised of ChairBarbara Cassani, a deputy chair, “who is expected to be Granada chairmanCharles Allen, the IOC trio and six others nominated by the bid’sstakeholders” (LondonTELEGRAPH, 6/24).

Tobacco companies spent nearly $128M on sports andsporting events in ‘00, a 50% increase from ‘96, according to the FTC.  Since ‘88, tobacco companies have had toreport separately the amount spent on sports. This amount includes sponsorship expenditures; advertising or promotionof sports events; support of individuals, teams or groups; and monies used topurchase or support equipment, uniforms, and sports facilities.  Also included is advertising in a sportsfacility, on a scoreboard, in conjunction with the reporting of sports results,or promotional items connected with sporting events.Thechart below details spending since ‘96 (FTC).
