CBS TODAY DETERMINES OLYMPIC BIDDING NOT BEST USE OFRESOURCES

CBStoday announced that it has withdrawn from bidding for the U.S. media rights tothe 2010 and 2012 Olympics, scheduled to begin this week in Switzerland.  In a statement, the network said, “CBS isthe best positioned network in terms of overall programming and sportslineup.  With all of the uncertaintiessurrounding two events that don’t conclude for another nine years, committingsignificant rights and production expenses to the 2010 and 2012 Olympic Gamesis not the best use of our resources” (THE DAILY).


NBA TO HOST FOUR PRESEASON GAMES AT INT’L ARENAS

TheNBA today announced a four-game preseason int’l schedule to include games in Mexico,Puerto Rico, France and Spain.  Theleague also pledged to stage preseason games prior to the ’04-05 season inShanghai and Beijing, China.  Theremainder of the ’03-04 preseason schedule has yet to be announced.  The int’l schedule is as follows (THEDAILY):

SPORTSLINE.COM TO PRODUCE PLAYERS INC ONLINE FANTASY GAME

Players Inc, the licensing arm of the NFLPA, andSportsLine.com today officially announced a new licensing and marketingpartnership, as part of which SportsLine.com will produce Players Inc’sfirst-ever online fantasy football game during the ‘03 NFL season.  The free “NFL Players” weekly fantasychallenge game will offer prize packages including autographed jerseys andtrips to the Pro Bowl.  In addition,SportsLine.com will provide Players Inc with a variety of direct marketingservices, including inclusion in exclusive product e-mails and fantasy dailyE-reports (THE DAILY).

TheSPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL reports that SportsLine.com “guarantees the NFLPA[$1-1.5M] in royalties over five years, commits to an aggressive advertisingcampaign with NFL players and grants the union 100,000 warrants for companystock” (SPORTSBUSINESSJOURNAL, 6/2 issue).


TIM HORTONS TO REMAIN CFL COFFEE/BAKED GOODS SPONSOR

The CFL today announced that Tim Hortons has renewed itssponsorship agreement for three years, under which the QSR will remain theofficial coffee and baked goods restaurant of the league, East and WestDivision championships and the Grey Cup. Sponsorship benefits include national use of the CFL trademarks and theofficial logos of the ’03-05 Grey Cups (THE DAILY).


BUZZER BEATERS

The WASHINGTON POST reportsthat the FCC “voted 3 to 2 along party lines today to relax or eliminatesome key media ownership rules, allowing a newspaper to own a (TV) station inthe same city and broadcast networks to buy more stations at the national andlocal levels.”  FCC Chair MichaelPowell joined fellow Republican commissioners Kathleen Abernathy andKevin Martin in approving the changes, while Democrats JonathanAdelstein and Michael Copps voted against the changes (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 5/2).

Minneapolis-based publishingand sports marketing firm GameDay Sports Marketing today announced that it hassigned publishing and advertising sales agreements with the Vikings, Packers,Seahawks, Univ. of WA, Univ. of CO and TX Christian Univ. (THE DAILY).

As expected, the N.Y. RoadRunners Club (NYRRC) and ING today announced a three-year title sponsorshipdeal, renaming the NYRRC’s feature event the ING New York City Marathon.  Over the course of the sponsorship, ING willcontribute more than $1M to the “ING Run For Something Better” program, whichpromotes advanced running and fitness programs locally and internationally (THEDAILY).

Yesterday’s Yankees-Tigerstelecast on FSN Detroit, which featured Roger Clemens’ second attempt athis 300th career victory as well as Ernie Harwell’s return tothe booth as a guest commentator, attracted the largest viewing audience in sixseasons of Tigers’ telecasts on the net with a 6.7/ (127,000 HHs) Nielsen cablerating.  The telecast peaked with a 9.6/(182,300 HHs) from 4:30-4:45pm ET.  Theprevious record came April 11, 2000, the team’s first home game at ComericaPark (THE DAILY).

The Montreal GAZETTE reportsthat the Canadiens today replaced Exec VP/Hockey & GM Andre Savardwith former team captain Bob Gainey. Gainey will also carry both titles (CANADA.com,6/2).

ESPN today announced that theCabletelevision Advertising Bureau has awarded it and the ABC Cable NetworksGroup the Network Achievement Award for excellence in local ad sales (THEDAILY).
