ISTANBUL TO MAKE OLYMPIC INTENTIONS OFFICIAL NEXT WEEK

The AP reports thatIstanbul will bid for the 2012 Olympics.  Mehmet Ali Sahin, theminister in charge of sports, told the Anatolia news agency today, “Wewill be a candidate for the 2012 Olympic Games.”  Yalcin Aksoy, who directed previous bids saidthat the country’s Olympic committee “most likely will make the bidofficial June 6.”  Istanbul failed inOlympic bids for 2000, 2004 and 2008. Other bidders for the 2012 Olympics are N.Y., London, Paris, Madrid,Moscow, Havana and Leipzig, Germany (AP,5/30).


MEDIA BUYERS EXPRESS CONCERN OVER MIKE TYSON REALITYSHOW

ESPN.com reports that the planned reality show featuring MikeTyson “is now on hold.”  TriageEntertainment Exec Producer Stu Schreiberg, who was negotiating with ABCthree months ago, said, “ABCelected to not do it perhaps because of questions surrounding ad sales.  There is another channel that is interested,but right now it is not moving forward at all. I guess it depends on what happens with Mike in the future.”  Media buyers “expressed concern that itmight not be prudent for companies to associate themselves as advertisers on aTyson show” (ESPN.com, 5/30).


HER REAL LIVING TO FILL BLUE JACKETS’ REAL ESTATE CATEGORY

The Blue Jackets today announced that they have signed atwo-year agreement with HER Real Living, naming the company as an officialpartner in the residential real estate category.  As part of the agreement, HER Real Living will offer real estateand relocation services to all employees of the Blue Jackets and NationwideArena (THE DAILY).


RBC CENTER OPERATOR REPORTS $13.9M LOSS OVER THREEYEARS

The Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER reports that Gale Force Sports and Entertainment, operator of the RBCCenter, says it “lost $13.9[M] in three years of staging” Hurricanes and NC StateUniv. basketball games, concerts and other events.  The company “expects to lose another $2.2[M] in thefiscal year that ends June 30.” Although taxpayers “paid most of the arena’s $167[M]construction cost, they are not on the hook for those operating losses” (RaleighNEWS & OBSERVER, 5/30).


LARRY DAVID SITS DOWN WITH COSTAS TONIGHT “ON THE RECORD”

A new edition of HBO’s “On The Record” with Bob Costaspremieres tonight at 11:30pm ET.  Inaddition to NBA HOFer Larry Bird, Costas sits down with “Curb YourEnthusiasm” creator Larry David. The N.Y. POST offers an excerpt from the interview, in which Davidrecalls quitting his job as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” because then-ExecProducer Dick Ebersol cut one of his sketches for the fourth consecutiveweek.  When he realized quitting wasn’tthe best idea, David went back to work the next Monday, pretending nothing hadhappened.  “Seinfeld” fans know thatexact situation was the inspiration for an episode (N.Y. POST, 5/30).  NEWSDAY adds that David reveals that YankeesOwner George Steinbrenner thought the character George was based on him(NEWSDAY,5/30).

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, onwhether rowdy sports fans have sullied Chicago’s national image: “Whocares?  It’s not a black eye for thecity.  It’s a sporting event.  They make money over there.  Ballplayers make money.  Give me a break” (CHICAGOSUN-TIMES, 5/30).

The National Association of Sports Commissionsrecognized the Atlanta Sports Council for having the most outstanding printadvertising and communication collateral in ’02 (THE DAILY).

The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER notes that CBS Sportsannouncer Don Criqui will receive the Pro Football HOF’s Pete RozelleRadio & TV Award this year for his “longtime exceptional contributions” tothe mediums (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 5/30).

Michelle Akers, Wade Boggs, Lee Corso, JimCourier and Dan Marino will be inducted into the FL Sports HOF (THEDAILY).

ESPNtoday announced that the net has been chosen to receive two National Women’sPolitical Caucus Exceptional Merit in Media Awards for excellence in mediacoverage of issues important to women. ESPN’s winners were part of the “Women in Sports Weekend” last July andwill be honored at the NWPC’s biennial convention in DC June 14.  ESPN won in the Features category, with “Onthe Basis of Sex: An ESPN Town Meeting,” and for “On The Basis of Sex: TheBattle of Title IX” in the Documentary category (THE DAILY).

Friday

The Marlins, as part of their tenth anniversary celebration,will hold a $10,000 giveaway contest during the 7:35pm ET game against the Redsat Pro Player Stadium.  Nine randomlyselected fans will be assigned an inning, and if the Marlins accomplish theirdesignated task for that inning, the fan will win $10,000.  Tasks include any Marlins player hitting agrand slam in the second inning, a homerun off either foul pole in the fifthinning and an inside-the-park homerun in the sixth inning (THE DAILY).

The Indians will celebrate the 100th birthday ofcomedian and former team part owner Bob Hope during their 7:05pm ET gameagainst the White Sox at Jacobs Field. The night includes a Bob Hope poster giveaway, as well as severalHope-themed activities throughout the game (THE DAILY).

Baseball HOF announcer Ernie Harwell will serve asguest commentator in the FSN broadcast booth for Yankees-Tigers at ComericaPark, filling in for FSN analyst Rod Allen, who will miss the game dueto a family commitment.  Coverage beginsat 12:30pm ET (THE DAILY).
