JELD-WEN TODAY BECOMES OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF PGA TOUR

The PGA Tour and OR-based window and door manufacturer Jeld-Wen today announced that Jeld-Wen has been granted the designation as the official window, door and millwork provider of the PGA Tour and Champions Tour. As part of the agreement, the company’s products will be incorporated into the construction of new Tournament Players Clubs, as well as the renovation of existing clubs. Additionally, Jeld-Wen has become an official sponsor of the World Golf Championships. Jeld-Wen signed a four-year title sponsorship deal for the Champions Tour Tradition last November (THE DAILY).


NESTLE TO FEATURE THREE WATER BRANDS ON PRO CYCLING TOUR

The Pro Cycling Tour (PCT) today announced a three-year, multi-million dollar agreement with Nestle Waters, making it the official water of the tour through ’05. Nestle Waters will feature its Deer Park, Poland Spring and Arrowhead brands, respectively, at the tour’s events in Philadelphia, N.Y. and S.F. this year. The PCT is owned and operated by sports marketing and event management firm Threshold Sports and is sanctioned by USA Cycling (THE DAILY).


ECHL TODAY DROPS “EAST COAST” FROM OFFICIAL LEAGUE NAME

The East Coast Hockey League today announced that effective immediately, it will simply be known as the ECHL, adopting the acronym as a stand-alone brand that will no longer represent the term “East Coast Hockey League.” The current logo will continue to be used, but the words “East Coast Hockey League” will be removed. Additionally, the league introduced a new tagline, “America’s Premier AA Hockey League.” Six teams from the current WCHL are joining the league this season – Anchorage Aces, Bakersfield Condors, Fresno Falcons, Idaho Steelheads, Long Beach Ice Dogs and San Diego Gulls. Three other expansion/relocated clubs will also begin play in new markets during the upcoming season – Gwinnett (GA) Gladiators, Las Vegas Wranglers and Texas Wildcatters (THE DAILY).


WRONGFUL DEATH SUIT CLOSED WITH STRINGER SETTLEMENT

The Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE reports that Hennepin County District Judge Gary Larson today released a statement saying that “Korey Stringer’s family and the only two remaining defendants in the family’s wrongful death suit have reached a settlement.” The amount of the settlement with the Mankato Clinic and Dr. David Knowles is undisclosed. Larson’s statement said that claims “brought by the family against the clinic and doctor have been resolved to the ‘mutual satisfaction’ of the parties” (STARTRIBUNE.com, 5/19). The ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS reports that once today’s settlement is approved, “the family plans to take the claims involving the team to the [MN] Court of Appeals” (TWINCITIES.com, 5/19).


BUZZER BEATERS

The AP reports that Greek officials and U.S.-based consortium Science Applications Int’l Corp., which was awarded the Olympic security contract in March, today officially signed the agreement. The contract “calls for the construction and operation of a central security command and communications system for the 2004 Games.” Under the $280M deal, Greek industries “will produce $110[M] worth of equipment” (AP, 5/19).

BLOODHORSE.com reports that the “peak” of NBC’s Preakness coverage, “when the actual race was run,” earned a 7.7/17 Nielsen overnight rating (BLOODHORSE.com, 5/19). Last year’s race, also on NBC, peaked with a 7.8/19 final Nielsen rating (THE DAILY).

The final phase of the MLB All-Star Balloting Program, sponsored by Pepsi, begins today at more than 15,000 Subway restaurants nationwide. Each All-Star ballot issued by Pepsi at Subway features a sweepstakes, dangling a grand prize of a trip for two to this year’s All-Star Week in Chicago and three trips for two to a select World Series game this year (THE DAILY).

The AP reports that French Ski Federation President Marcel Calvat today said that he “will resign after failing to steer the organization from bankruptcy.” The federation, which has debt of about US$2.2M, filed for bankruptcy protection today (AP, 5/19).

The THOROUGHBRED TIMES reports that the legal gambling age in AZ will increase from 18 to 21 beginning June 1. Racetrack officials “expect a small financial hit from losing the patronage” of 18-20-year-olds as that demographic accounted for 1-3% of total business (THOROUGHBRED TIMES, 5/19).

The Supreme Court "refused" to consider whether a student can be barred from school for wearing a "Top Ten Reasons You Might Be a Redneck Sports Fan" T-shirt (KATC.com, 5/19).

The PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER notes that the first official event ever at Lincoln Financial Field will take place tonight when Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie “hosts his brethren for a reception in one of the stadium’s two club lounges, the one known as the Mercedes-Benz Club Lounge” (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 5/19).

The VA Baseball Stadium Authority will conduct a public information session regarding the group’s proposed ballpark plans at the TJ Community Center in Alexandria, VA, at 7:30pm ET (THE DAILY).

It behooves the league to be proactive in this regard. … But Moreno is walking into a great game that sometimes resists the most implemental steps of evolution, often to its own detriment” (OAKLAND TRIBUNE).

A Business Information Network study shows that ad pages in March declined 5% from March ’02, and the year-to-date decline was also 5%. The biggest decline “came in horticulture and farming, down 43.3[%]. Of the categories with gains, the largest was home and building, up 8.2[%]” (N.Y. TIMES, 5/19).

Lowe’s Cos. today announced that its Q1 ‘03 earnings rose by nearly 22%, but “sales fell short of projections.” Lowe’s reported net income of $421M, up from $346M in the same period last year. Sales were $7.2B, an increase of 11%, but short of analysts’ projections of $7.41B (AP, 5/19). As of presstime, Lowe’s shares were down $3.61 to $40.69 (THE DAILY).
