TODAY’S ARTICLES OF INTEREST

The S.F. CHRONICLE’s C.W. Nevius writes of NASCAR’s growing popularity and calls it “the whitest sport in America.  The drivers are white, the pit crews are white and it has become a cliché to note that at most races, Confederate flags outnumber African American fans” (S.F. CHRONICLE).

In a special to the L.A. TIMES, World Anti-Doping Agency Chair Dick Pound and USA Track & Field CEO Craig Masback debate U.S. drug testing policies.  Pound’s point: “Stonewalling has become the new American Way, with ethics and credibility the primary casualties.”  Masback’s counterpoint: “The U.S., rightfully held to a higher standard, continues to be at the forefront in rooting out drug cheats” (L.A. TIMES).

The WASHINGTON POST’s Mark Maske writes of the Redskins’ free-agent shopping spree last week, “Questions have been raised about whether the Redskins sacrificed a defense ranked fifth in the NFL in the their zeal to improve their offense.  But agents, Redskins officials and the players involved in the transactions all agreed that the Redskins were successful in one aspect: They drew up a list of players they wanted, decided to try to get them quickly – and got many of them” (WASHINGTON POST).

The SALT LAKE TRIBUNE’s Janet Rae Brooks writes, “Turin yearns to shed its image as the country’s gray auto-making capital – the Detroit of Italy – and blossom instead into a tourist draw to rival Rome, Florence and Venice.”  TOROC CEO Paolo Rato: “We are expecting after the Games a substantial increase in tourism.  People don’t know what or where Torino is.  They think it’s an industrial city with chimneys” (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE).

In a sports section Cover Story, USA TODAY’s Mike Dodd writes, “Physicians in several U.S. states are dealing with a malpractice crisis in health care today.  But those who treat multimillionaire pro athletes are particularly nervous because the potential damages in a lawsuit against them could be astronomical. … The medical world in pro sports is tiptoeing through uncertain times, with money issues threatening to compromise the quality of care given finely tuned athletes” (USA TODAY).
