PHILIPS OPTS TO CONTINUE WORLD CUP SPONSORSHIP

FIFA announced today that Philips has activated its option to become an official partner of the '06 World Cup in Germany, extending a partnership that began in '86. The agreement also includes sponsorship of the '03 Women's World Cup in China. Philips joins adidas, Avaya, A-B, Coca-Cola, Deutsche Telekom, Gillette, McDonald's, Toshiba and Yahoo! as official partners of the '06 World Cup. DEUTSCHE BANK, PGA TOUR ANNOUNCE NEW TOURNAMENT

In an announcement that has been expected for some time, Deutsche Bank and the PGA Tour formally announced today the two organizations will create the Deutsche Bank U.S. Championship, to be played Labor Day weekend of '03. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Tiger Woods Foundation. The IMG-managed event will be played at the TPC of Boston, and will be aired on ABC (THE DAILY).


CART POSTS NET LOSS OF $8.3M IN Q3 '02, YTD REVENUES DOWN $12M+

Shares of CART are off 12.55%, to $4.18, as of presstime today, after the company released its Q3 earnings this morning.  CART had one fewer event during this year's third-quarter than in '01, and the company reported that total revenue for the three months ended September 30 was $18.5M, compared with $29.6M for the same period a year ago. Total expenses for the quarter declined to $32.2M from $34M, while the company reported a net loss for the quarter of $8.3M, or $0.56 per share, compared with a net loss of $1.7M, or $0.11 per share, in the same quarter in '01.  Through September 30, CART has conducted 15 races compared with 16 in the first nine months of '01, and total revenues were $43.4M versus $55.8M in '01, while expenses for the current year-to-date rose to $65.9M from $57.9M a year ago (THE DAILY).


ANNUAL COLLEGE TOURNAMENT HAS RAISED $2M SINCE INCEPTION

The Coaches vs. Cancer Classic begins tonight at MSG at 7:00pm ET, featuring a Syracuse-Memphis and Oklahoma-Alabama doubleheader. The two-day event continues tomorrow night with a doubleheader featuring Villanova-Marquette and Texas-Georgia, beginning at 6:30pm. All games will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. Since '96, the tournament has raised nearly $2M to support cancer research. AT&T Wireless is the title sponsor of the event (THE DAILY). Sponsors for the event include:

LOCAL MARRIOTT, INFINEON RACEWAY AGREE TO THREE-YEAR DEAL

The Napa Valley Marriott Hotel and Spa has signed a three-year deal with Infineon Raceway to become a presenting sponsor of the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma next July 25-27. The American Le Mans Series event, which will be broadcast nationally on NBC, will be known as the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma, presented by Napa Valley Marriott Hotel and Spa.  The partnership also includes plans to hold special racing events and promotions for fans and teams at the Napa property (THE DAILY).


ROGERS SPORTSNET AGREES TO CARRY 11 AHL GAMES IN '02-03

The AHL announced today a multi-year agreement with Rogers Sportsnet to broadcast 11 games during the '02-03 season on the Canadian net. The net will also cover the '03 AHL All-Star Classic from Portland, ME, as well as the league's weekly magazine program, "Inside the AHL," in all four of its broadcast regions (THE DAILY).

Meanwhile, the AHL Houston Aeros' 7:00pm CT game versus the Milwaukee Admirals, originally planned as "Guaranteed Fight Night," has been re-dubbed "Guaranteed Win Night." If the team wins, all fans will receive a free ticket to the Aeros' November 21 game against the Hartford Wolf Pack. If the team loses or ties, fans will receive discounted tickets for the same game (THE DAILY).


BUZZER BEATERS

PAINT BOOTH: Each week, some auto racing teams display new paint schemes on their cars to reflect a different sponsor, brand, promotion or special cause.  This week, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series visits Homestead-Miami Speedway for its season finale. At the race, Newell-Rubbermaid is featuring its Little Tikes brand on the No. 97 Roush Racing Ford of Kurt Busch (THE DAILY).

The Brewers announced today that the team will operate a retail cart, "Brewers Baseball Basics," today through the end of the year at the Mayfair Mall in Milwaukee. The cart, which will feature Brewers apparel, merchandise and gift certificates redeemable during the '03 season, is one of the first new marketing initiatives for '03 (THE DAILY).

Game manufacturer Sorrent has launched Fox Sports "On-Field Live" Football, a game designed for Java- or BREW-enabled cell phones. The game is currently available to subscribers of AT&T Wireless and Sprint, with plans to make it available on other U.S. carriers later this year (THE DAILY).

Speed Channel announced today that its live coverage of NASCAR Winston Cup
Series qualifying from Phoenix last week earned a 1.08/ (588,000 HHs) Nielsen cable rating, which marks the highest rating ever for qualifying on Speed. With two replays later in the day, the cumulative rating was a 1.51/ (822,000 HHs). Speed Channel said that its primetime audience ratings are up 47% since the network's re-launch in February (THE DAILY).

CO-based USA Rugbyannounced today that veteran sports exec Doug Arnot has been named its first CEO and will officially assume the position on December 1.  Arnot helped direct the operations of the '02 Winter Games in Salt Lake City and managed venues and operations during the '96 Summer Games in Atlanta (THE DAILY).

The ROANOKE TIMES notes that ESPN broadcaster Bill Walton "will be one fan who stands Deadhead and shoulders above the rest," when The Other Ones, a band comprised of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead, begin a 14-city tour tonight at the Roanoke Civic Center in Roanoke, VA (ROANOKE TIMES, 11/14).

The SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE reports that PGA Tour golfer Phil Mickelson, who recently signed as a Ford endorser, ordered two Aston Martins from a local dealership. Mickelson "chose the V12 Vanquish featured in James Bond's newest flick – minus, of course, the mini-missiles and concealed machine gun." The car has a sticker price of $234,000 (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 11/14).

The YORK (PA) DAILY RECORD offers an interview with former Packers Exec VP & GM Ron Wolf, who says of Ravens coach Brian Billick, "I really can't stand Billick. I'm sure he gets up every morning and goes in front of the mirror and says, 'Mirror, mirror, I'm the fairest of them all.'" Whether backpedaling or being sincere, Wolf then adds, "What they are doing this year is just remarkable in pro football. I don't know how they're doing it. Brian Billick is doing a magnificent job there" (YORK (PA) DAILY RECORD, 11/14).

A new 30-second spot featuring the Boyz II Men original, "Step On Up," will air for the first time during tonight's Spurs-Sixers game. The spot was created to remind people to tune into Sixers' games on Comcast SportsNet (THE DAILY).

Red Sox Owner John Henry and team Chair Tom Werner announced today that the Red Sox Foundation will receive more than $14M from the team's current partners and some former Red Sox partners.  The Foundation's activity will emphasize education, athletics, and social issues in New England (THE DAILY).

FOXSPORTS.com' Jim Kelley conducts an interview with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to discuss a variety of topics, including the perception that the league is having an attendance problem. Bettman: "There is no attendance problem. This comes up every season in October and November… [but] by the end of the season, we have another attendance record" (FOXSPORTS.com).

The INDIANAPOLIS STAR's Steve Ballard looks at CART President Chris Pook's first year on the job and reports that to hear Pook tell it, "CART is right where it needs to be, doing exactly what it needs to do, to ensure the future of the 23-year-old series." Nevertheless, Ballard offers "five challenges" for the '03 season (INDIANAPOLIS STAR).

The WASHINGTON TIMES' Eric Fisher writes that club seats, "the once-hot sports seating that attempted to bridge the gap between normal sections and the upscale perks of luxury suites, have fallen on hard times," with a sales lag that is "now seen nationwide." The NBA, "which enjoys a strong relationship with corporate America and leans particularly hard on club seats, is feeling the pinch most" (WASHINGTON TIMES).

The DENVER WESTWORD's Michael Roberts profiles former ESPN reporter Steve Cyphers, who recently left the network "in favor of a position about as far from the limelight as it's possible to get – namely a job at a small Roman Catholic school in Grand Junction (CO)." While many people claim to put family first, "Cyphers is among the fraction of those who actually mean it" (DENVER WESTWORD, 11/14).

The N.Y. POST reports that tonight in a "gala reception at his World Bar in Trump World Tower" Donald Trump will reveal a new luxury lifestyle magazine to be published quarterly, called Trump World. Trump isn't "actually putting any money into the (magazine), but will get a slice of any profits down the road" (N.Y. POST, 11/14).

DAILY VARIETY reported that the BBC Worldwide "has inked a multiyear pact with CBS to bring the award-winning 'Robbie the Reindeer'" to the net in December. CBS Sports anchors Dick Enberg and Dan Dierdorf will provide voices for the show (DAILY VARIETY, 11/12).
