FIRST MONDAY IN OCTOBER: COURT PASSES ON TWO SPORTS CASES

The U.S. Supreme Court "passed up a chance Monday to intervene in a soccer labor dispute," as it gave a group of players "a third straight defeat in their challenge" of MLS.  The players, who accused the league of being "an illegal monopoly, also lost in a jury trial, and before a federal appeals court" (AP, 10/7).

The U.S. Supreme Court also ruled against former heavyweight boxer Randall “Tex” Cobb in his bid to revive a $10.7M jury award against AOL Time Warner over a Sports Illustrated story that accused him of fixing a fight. The justices, "without comment, left intact a federal appeals court's conclusion that Sports Illustrated didn't defame Cobb" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 10/7).

As of presstime, shares of Nike were down $1.83, or 4.36%, to $40.11. Shares of Reebok were down $0.89, or 3.84%, to $22.29 (REUTERS, 10/7).
