ESPN VP TO MEET WITH THE JUNCTION BOYS TO DISCUSS VISION

The HOUSTON CHRONICLE reports that ESPN Senior VP/Program Strategy Len DeLuca tomorrow will meet with a dozen Texas A&M players from the '54 team about the net's adaptation of Jim Dent's "The Junction Boys: How Ten Days in Hell With Bear Bryant Forged a Championship Team."  DeLuca: "It's a chance to get together and talk with the actual stars of this story.  We want to share our vision with them about the story, get to know them and share some of the ideas we have as the project goes forward" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 10/4).


ESPN REBUFFED IN REQUEST TO INTERVIEW QUEEN ELIZABETH

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip will attend Sunday's 7:00pm PT Sharks-Canucks preseason game at GM Place in Vancouver, and the Queen will drop the ceremonial opening puck.  On ice during the ceremony will be NHL HOFer Wayne Gretzky, Canucks D Ed Jovanovski and Canadian Women's team captain Cassie Campbell (THE DAILY).

The Vancouver PROVINCE reports that a producer from ESPN Radio's "The Dan Patrick Show" called the Canucks to "line up Queen Elizabeth" for an interview (Vancouver PROVINCE, 10/4).  Responding to the request, which was denied, Canucks Manager of Media Relations Chris Brumwell said, "I phoned [ESPN] back and explained it's a pretty difficult request, probably in the same line of trying to get an interview with the Pope" (OTTAWA SUN, 10/4).


GRAND PRIX AMERICAS PLAYS TO A SWANKY CROWD IN MIAMI

The Grand Prix Americas (GPA) begins today in Miami, highlighted by practice and qualifying for the Cadillac American LeMans Challenge, and the AP notes that "for the first time, the CART and American LeMans series are sharing top billing at the same venue on the same weekend" (AP, 10/4).

The MIAMI HERALD reports the "truly well connected will be enjoying the races … from the swanky waterfront Lalique Club."  GPA President Chuck Martinez: "CART fans are typically in a higher financial demographic. These are affluent people. Caviar people.  Just look at the level of our sponsors – Mumm champagne, Cadillac, Lalique French crystal, The Collection." Among the "affluent people" expected to be in attendance are Lenny Kravitz, Denzel Washington and Rangers SS Alex Rodriguez (MIAMI HERALD, 10/4).

TOYS "R" US TO DISPLAY MLBP LICENSED PRODUCT IN N.Y. STORE

MLBP has partnered with Toys "R" Us Times Square to turn the flagship store's window displays into an MLB-themed shop that features MLBP licensed products.  The store will also host a variety of MLB events including player appearances and autograph sessions.  The display is currently open and will remain throughout the month.  Toys "R" Us was an official MLB partner from '99-'01 (THE DAILY).

The L.A. TIMES reports that NASCAR's in-car pay package – NASCAR In Car On iN Demand – will be offered free on Sunday during the Winston Cup EA Sports 500 (L.A. TIMES, 10/4).

USA Hockey today announced a licensing agreement with hotSPORTSnetworks' coachesPLANNER online product for USA Hockey and USA Hockey InLine coaches, players and parents.  The program may be accessed through USA Hockey's Web site (THE DAILY).

Friday

The New England Basketball HOF will induct its first-ever class tonight at the Univ. of RI's Ryan Center.  Included among the 100 inductees are NBA HOFers Bob Cousy and Julius Erving, Univ. of CT coach Jim Calhoun and former Gallaudet Univ. F Jessica Whitney (PROVIDENCE JOURNAL, 10/4).

The '72 Dolphins will be honored tonight for their perfect season at Club Level on South Beach at 11:00pm ET.  Tickets for the event range from $25-100 (MIAMI HERALD, 10/4).


Saturday

Warriors Exec Dir of Basketball Operations Otis Smith and Special Assistant Chris Mullin will unveil a renovated basketball court at F.M. Smith Recreation Center in Oakland from 1:00-3:00pm PT (THE DAILY).

The NHL Panthers will host a select-a-seat day at Office Depot Center from 10:00am-2:00pm ET.  Meanwhile, Panthers coach Mike Keenan will be the keynote speaker at the GameOn 2002 Luncheon beginning at 11:30am ET at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Sunrise, FL (THE DAILY).
