TODAY'S ARTICLES OF INTEREST

The DALLAS MORNING NEWS' Alan Goldstein writes, "Unlike its frenzied owner, Mark Cuban's HDNet TV channel seems to move in slow motion." While HDNet LLC "was launched a year ago as the nation's first television network devoted completely to high-definition programming," the tech industry's "deep slump makes companies more cautious about investing" in the venture (DALLAS MORNING NEWS).

The Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW's Lou Ransom writes that the business of corporate sponsorships "is big business, with more than $9.3 billion spent nationwide last year, as companies attempt to buy goodwill and customer loyalty, while also stamping their brand on regional and national events" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW).

The L.A. TIMES' Larry Stewart writes that John Madden "is an anomaly." In a business "where youth and hipness mean everything, Madden is neither young nor hip." ABC is "counting on Madden to make a connection with all types, young and old, male and female. That is a key reason the network lured him away from Fox with a four-year, $20-million contract" (L.A. TIMES).
