SIDES MEET BRIEFLY TODAY FOR FURTHER MLB NEGOTIATIONS

The AP reports that MLB and MLBPA negotiators “met [this] morning, then broke for internal discussions,” and it “was unclear if they would meet again later in the day.” The union's exec board “is to hold a telephone call Friday, and without progress probably would set a strike date, most likely Aug. 30” (AP, 8/15).


NIKE SHARES FALL ON FOOT LOCKER’S CUT IN FUTURE ORDERS

Shares of Nike dropped today and later rebounded after the company lowered projections for worldwide future orders due to a decrease from Foot Locker, Nike’s largest customer. Changes in November orders from Foot Locker dropped to 6.3% from 6.6%, as previously announced. Shares of Nike were trading at $44.75, up 1%, in late afternoon trading (REUTERS, 8/15).


SPEEDWAY SETTLES WITH 12 IN COLLAPSING BRIDGE CASE

The AP reports that 12 people injured when a walkway at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, NC, collapsed after a NASCAR race two years ago “settled lawsuits against the speedway and the walkway's builder” this morning. Terms of the settlement are confidential, but an attorney for the plaintiffs said some “will receive lump-sum payments, while others will be paid over time” (AP, 8/15).


PAINT BOOTH: PENSKE SOUTH TO UNLOAD DIFFERENT LOOK IN MI

Each week, some auto racing teams display different paint schemes on their cars to reflect a different sponsor, brand, promotion or special cause. This week, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series visits Michigan Int'l Speedway for Sunday's Pepsi 400. Penske Racing South will feature special paint schemes on both its cars, as the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford of Rusty Wallace will sport the Harley-Davidson logo, and Mobil 1 replaces Alltel as the featured sponsor on Ryan Newman's No. 12 Ford.

In addition to the full-time competitors in the Winston Cup Series, several companies are involved with the series on a limited basis, and at this weekend's event, Roush Racing will enter the No. 16 TNT/Team Caliber Ford of driver Greg Biffle. Regal Corp. will back Melling Racing's No. 92 Dodge of Stacy Compton, while MNR Productions will leverage the music group Poison on BAM Racing's No. 49 Dodge of Derrike Cope. Meanwhile, in the Busch Series, Pepsi will sponsor NBC/TNT analyst Wally Dallenbach and the No. 6 Tommy Baldwin Racing Dodge (THE DAILY).


RADIO LAWSUIT SEEKS TO SILENCE MONTANA STATE UNIV. COACH

The BOZEMAN DAILY CHRONICLE reports that Reier Broadcasting Corporation Owner Bill Reier Sr., whose company broadcasted Montana State Univ. sports for approximately a decade, "now has in his hands a restraining order” that forbids football coach Mike Kramer from “appearing on any radio or television stations or broadcasts, other than affiliates of RBC or 'Cat Sports 30' until further order." Montana State Univ. left Reier for Clear Channel Communications last month, which sparked the Reier lawsuit (BOZEMAN DAILY CHRONICLE, 8/15).


BUZZER BEATERS

Comcast SportsNet has been nominated for 13 Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards, which will be handed out on Saturday, September 14, at the John Wanamaker Building in Philadelphia (THE DAILY).

St. Louis is among four finalist cities bidding on the ’06 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The USFSA’s site selection committee reviewed bids from six cities, and narrowed the candidates to St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Minneapolis. A final decision on the host will be made in November (THE DAILY).

Interactive Motorsports & Entertainment Corp. has acquired Perfect Line, which owns and operates the NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway racing centers. The Speedway centers are the largest chain of officially licensed NASCAR-branded entertainment and retail stores. Perfect Line Chair & CEO William Donaldson said, "With the recent completion of a $2.6 million private equity financing, the company is essentially debt-free and well-positioned for growth, with 12 mall racing centers open, over $1 million in working capital, and a solid management team in place at the corporate and store level” (THE DAILY).

The Pro Disc Golf Association (PDGA) and SportsLoop today announced a partnership that will require SportsLoop to handle the marketing and publicity of the PDGA’s inaugural National Tour in ’03 (THE DAILY).
