AMTRAK & MARRIOTT BOARD TRAIN FOR YANKEES & RED SOX SERIES

By Terry Lefton, Editor-at-Large, The Sports Business Daily

Amtrak and Marriott are taking advantage of this weekend's Red Sox-Yankees series in N.Y. to do some B-to-B marketing. In an attempt to push its high-speed Acela train that goes from Boston to Washington, DC, Amtrak will load up a train Friday with legends from both teams, including Luis Tiant, Jim Rice, Johnny Pesky, Goose Gossage and Mike Pagliarulo. There will also be a series of dinners and breakfasts during this series and during the Yankees-Red Sox series in Boston next month. Amtrak and Marriott were brought in by way of their team sponsorships with both clubs and spent incremental dollars to underwrite the schmoozefest. ANC Sports Sales and Marketing, Boston, conceived the idea and help sell for the Sox. Both the Yanks and BoSox use ANC rotational signage in their respective parks (THE DAILY).

YAHOO RENEWS WITH LEARFIELD & ISP FOR INTERNET AUDIOCASTS

By Marcus DiNitto, Managing Editor, The Sports Business Daily

Yahoo Sports has renewed and extended its agreement with MO-based Learfield Communications and NC-based Int'l Sports Properties (ISP) that will bring 23 schools back into the Yahoo broadcast fold for the upcoming college football season. Yahoo provides live audio for over 100 college football teams. Among the schools repped by Learfield and ISP are the Univ. of AL, Univ. of NC, Marshall Univ., Univ. of OK, OK State, Syracuse, OR State, VA Tech and Univ. of WI. Yahoo Dir of Sports Brian Grey told THE DAILY this afternoon the company "anticipates offering the largest number of college audio broadcasts on the Internet." Grey added Yahoo will carry audio Internet broadcasts for 50 of the 70 schools within the big seven conferences – the Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10, Big East, ACC, SEC and Mountain West. Grey: "We will be very strong with the schools that typically drive the largest number of listeners." Yahoo also has a deal with Host Communications, which reps nine schools for Internet audio rights, as well as a number of deals with schools directly. Concurrently with the Learfield/ISP renewal, Yahoo has opted not to renew its partnership with FansOnly, and Grey said, "Ultimately, we just didn't feel like the option (to renew) made sense based on our overall approach to the college audio business" (THE DAILY).
