DUPUY DOWNPLAYS PAYROLL CRISIS, DOES NOT RULE OUT

MLB COO Bob DuPuy tells ESPN.com today that he "believes no team will miss paying its players on July 15, a day after baseball commissioner Bud Selig indicated that was a possibility."  But DuPuy did say that the possibility exists later this season: "I believe that the immediate crisis has been solved regarding the team that could have missed payroll (on July 15). ... [But] there are legitimate concerns about some clubs" (ESPN.com, 7/11).


WILPON SUIT REQUIRES DOUBLEDAY TO ACCEPT METS APPRAISAL

Mets co-Owner Fred Wilpon said today that he has filed a lawsuit against fellow co-Owner Nelson Doubleday, attempting to "force Doubleday to accept the $391 million appraisal of the club from last October."  The suit states Doubleday "must sell his half of the club to Wilpon based on the value determined by Robert Starkey" in October of '01 (NEWSDAY.com, 7/11).


RED SOX TO PLACE TWO NEW ADS ABOVE GREEN MONSTER

The Red Sox today announced a sponsorship agreement with New England Volvo Retailers to serve as their official business vehicle sponsors.  The agreement calls for Volvo to supply the team with approximately 70 cars over the next three years.  In addition, the BOSTON HERALD reports that Volvo and The Sports Authority will put "signs in the netting above the Green Monster as part of larger advertising deals struck with the new Sox ownership."  The Red Sox' three-year deal with Volvo "includes other advertising and sponsorship opportunities inside the park that could bring the team several million dollars a year in revenue" (BOSTON HERALD, 7/11).


25 YEARS LATER, THE MUPPETS CATCH A RIDE WITH NASCAR

This week, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series visits Chicagoland Speedway for Sunday's Tropicana 400.  The Muppets will take to the track under a deal between Action Performance and The Jim Henson Company in celebration of The Muppet Show's 25th Anniversary.  Through a collaborative effort among The Jim Henson Company, drivers, their teams and sponsors, Action Performance created special Muppets-themed cars, the drivers' uniforms and helmets, and die-cast collectibles.  The event will feature "Rowlf the Dog" on Casey Atwood's No. 7 Sirius Satellite Dodge, "Swedish Chef" on Bill Elliott's No. 9 Dodge Dealers Dodge, "Fozzie Bear" on Johnny Benson's No. 10 Valvoline Pontiac, "Pepe" and "King Prawn" on Bobby Labonte's No. 18 Interstate Batteries Pontiac, "Dr. Honeydew" and "Beaker" on Jeremy Mayfield's No. 19 Dodge Dealers Dodge, "Gonzo the Great" on Ricky Rudd's No. 28 Havoline Ford, "Animal" on Jimmy Spencer's No. 41 Target Dodge and "Kermit the Frog" and "Miss Piggy" on Dale Jarrett's No. 88 UPS Ford (THE DAILY).

ADT LOCKS UP TITLE SPONSORSHIP FOR FL GOLF COMPETITION

ADT Security Services will become the new title sponsor of the ADT Golf Skills Challenge played at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in Boca Raton, FL.  The two-day competition will be televised on NBC Saturday and Sunday, December 28-29.  Participants will be announced at a later date (THE DAILY).


ADIDAS-SALOMON CREATES FASHION SPORTSWEAR UNIT

adidas-Salomon has created a three-divisional structure for its core brand, adidas, and will dub the third division "adidas Sport Style," led by Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto.  The first adidas Sport Style products designed by Yamamoto will be presented in October '02, while the collection will hit retail in Spring/Summer '03 (DOW JONES, 7/11).


BUZZER BEATERS

The PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER reports that, according to authorities, 76ers G Allen Iverson "will be charged with four felony counts and related charges for forcing his way into his cousin's apartment with a gun."  Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said that he "would make arrangements with Iverson's attorney for Iverson to turn himself in," which could happen as early as tonight (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 7/11).

The NEW BRITAIN HERALD reports that members of Congress today will ask MLB officials and players to "immediately adopt a mandatory drug testing policy aimed at eliminating steroid use."  A letter co-authored by U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY) and U.S. Rep. Tom Osborne (R-NE) was circulated throughout the Capitol on Wednesday and "cites the negative physical impact steroids can have on users, but mainly focuses on the perception steroid use may have on younger athletes" (NEW BRITAIN HERALD, 7/11).

MI talk radio host Dave Barber has filed a lawsuit against MLB seeking damages in excess of $25,000 that insists that the '02 All-Star Game be completed from where it left off Tuesday evening.  In his complaint, filed in a MI Circuit Court, Barber asserts that the halting of the game caused fans harm and a loss of faith in the sport (THE DAILY).

Sporting News Radio announced today that Bill Parcells has re-signed for two more years to host his weekly football show with Boston Globe columnist Will McDonough and Sporting News Radio host Bruce Murray, extending the show through the '04 NFL season.  The hour-long show premieres this year on September 5 and will air Thursdays at 5:00pm ET (THE DAILY).

Celtics F Antoine Walker has been selected to receive the NBA Community Assist Award for his community outreach during the month of June (THE DAILY).

The ECHL announced today that it has reached a two-year marketing and licensing agreement with SP Apparel, which will produce authentic and replica jerseys for several ECHL teams.  SP Apparel also retains rights for the production of game jerseys for the '03 Compuware/ECHL All-Star Game and the '04 ECHL All-Star Game (THE DAILY).

Daktronics announced today that it will provide a new, integrated video and scoring display system for the Fargodome in Fargo, ND.  The value of the project exceeds $4M (THE DAILY).

LiquidSeats and MSN announced an agreement to offer live event tickets as part of the launch of MSN Tickets (THE DAILY).
