TURNER CREATES 10-YEAR ALLIANCE TO POWER PGA INTERACTIVE

Turner Sports President Mark Lazarus and PGA CEO Jim Awtrey today announced a 10-year alliance with Turner Sports Interactive to manage PGA Interactive operations, including PGA.com. Both parties also signed a six-year TV extension for TNT to continue airing four days of the PGA Championship and to provide coverage of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf through 2011 (THE DAILY).


WORLD CUP WATCH PARTIES SPRING UP AT SUNRISE

Among the many viewing parties for tomorrow's 7:00am ET World Cup quarterfinal match between U.S.-Germany, RFK Stadium in DC will show the match on the facility's giant video screen. Gates will open at 6:30am ET for the event, which will be free and open to the public (WASHINGTON POST, 6/20). The MLS Wizards "will play host to their fifth World Cup watch party" for the U.S.-Germany match at 6:19am CT at the Arrowhead Pavilion in K.C. Doors will open at 5:30am (K.C. STAR, 6/20).

Meanwhile, the AP reports that Pele "pinpointed two standouts" from each World Cup team, and "had kind words" for U.S. team members Landon Donovan and John O'Brien. Pele: ''Donovan has played very well and O'Brien has showed me he is an excellent player" (AP, 6/20).


PROPOSED BILL WOULD REQUIRE DRUG TESTS AT NY BALLPARKS

The AP reports that, under a proposal in the NY Legislature announced today, MLB players "would be tested for steroids before playing in Yankee or Shea stadiums." Last week, a similar bill was introduced into the CA Legislature that would require MLB and "all professional sports to submit policies on steroid testing." The NY bill's sponsor, Assemblyman Howard Mills, "hopes the proposal would spark a national debate and pressure [MLB] and the [MLBPA] to act before they are subject to legislation" (AP, 6/20).


NIKE TO COMMEMORATE 30 YEARS IN PORTLAND WITH GIFT

Nike presented the city of Portland with a gift this afternoon to commemorate the company's 30th anniversary of operation in the area. Nike USA President Gary DeStefano and Portland Mayor Vera Katz were on hand for the presentation. While details were unavailable, the gift promised to help revitalize the city's neighborhoods (THE DAILY).


BUZZER BEATERS

The AP reports that Browns Owner Al Lerner "is donating $100 million to the Cleveland Clinic and the school for medical research it's starting with Case Western Reserve University." The clinic's chief fund-raiser, Bruce Loessin, said, "We think it's by far the biggest gift ever given in the history of northeast Ohio" (AP, 6/20).

Flames RW Jarome Iginla won the Lester B. Pearson Award today as the NHL's most outstanding player. Iginla won the NHL scoring title with 96 points and had a league-high 52 goals, earning him the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer and the Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy as the top goal-scorer (AP, 6/20).

Chargers QB Doug Flutie and his wife, Laurie, will be named the David A. Kovitz Man & Woman of the Year by the MA-based 500 Club at the organization's annual fund raiser tonight at Symphony Hall (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/20).

Vikings coach Mike Tice will deliver the keynote address at the Opening Ceremonies of the Minnesota Special Olympics Summer Games at 7:30pm CT on the Univ. of MN campus. During tomorrow's competition, Vikings DE Willie Howard and RB James Wofford will sign autographs and present medals from 1:00-3:00pm CT (THE DAILY).

Bow Wow will appear at the NBA Store in N.Y. to discuss the upcoming film "Like Mike" at 5:00pm ET. In Philadelphia, the 76ers and the Greater Philadelphia Film Office will host a special benefit screening of the film at the Ritz East Theater at 7:00pm ET (THE DAILY).

Shares of Walt Disney Co. dropped to a seven-month low today after Merrill Lynch "cut its earnings outlook for the entertainment giant, citing troubles at its TV and film units." The company's stock was trading at $19.69, down $1.17, in late afternoon trading (REUTERS, 6/20).

The AP reports that the U.S. trade deficit "swelled to a record $35.9 billion in April as Americans' appetite for foreign-made cars and consumer goods, such as TVs and clothes, hit monthly all-time highs" (AP, 6/20).

REUTERS reports that U2 singer Bono visited French President Jacques Chirac at his Paris palace Thursday and "emerged with a promise that France's contribution in aid to poor countries would increase in coming years" (REUTERS, 6/20).

Cindy Crawford said today that she was "considering taking a multi-million dollar trip into space with Russian cosmonauts." Crawford said, "I would go if I could be there and back in a week" (REUTERS, 6/20).
