S.F. OLYMPIC GROUP LOCALIZES ITS 2012 BID PLAN

The S.F. CHRONICLE reports, "Acting on suggestions from the [USOC] to concentrate as many events as possible locally," a group that is working to bring the 2012 Summer Olympics to San Francisco has "moved archery, cycling and baseball from Sacramento to sites on the Peninsula." Under the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee's new plan, 92% of the competition sites "would be within 32 miles of the proposed Olympic Village at Moffett Field near Mountain View" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 4/10).


PRICE IS RIGHT: GOLFER TO BE HONORED FOR ACCOMMODATION

The AUGUSTA CHRONICLE reports that PGA Tour golfer Nick Price "will receive the inaugural ASAP Sports/Jim Murray Award" at the Golf Writers Association of America banquet at Radisson Riverfront Hotel Augusta tonight. The award goes to a professional for his "cooperation, quoteability and accommodation to the media." Read a complete list of the awards that will be handed out tonight (AUGUSTA CHRONICLE, 4/10).


LSU-TULANE LOOK TO KNOCK CROWD RECORD OUT OF BALLPARK

The New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE reports that when LSU and Tulane meet tonight in the Superdome, the two schools are "hoping to draw college baseball's largest crowd" ever. So far, 22,554 tickets have been sold, which is "enough to break college baseball's attendance mark for a regular-season game." The all-time record of 24,859 was set at a College World Series game in Omaha in '99 (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 4/10).


FOX GETS IN THE ZONE WITH PLANNED SPORTS GRILL CHAIN

Fox Sports announced today that it will launch Fox Sports Grill, the first of which is scheduled to open in Scottsdale, AZ, this fall. Additional restaurants and sports bars will open in other U.S. cities in the months that follow. Fox Sports will join with B & B Restaurant Ventures, which has an exclusive agreement to develop, finance and manage operations of Fox Sports Grill (THE DAILY).


BUZZER BEATERS

Verizon Wireless today announced its sponsorship of the NBA Hoop-It-Up tournament, a 3-on-3, 41-city event (THE DAILY).

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway today will announce the installation of "soft wall" technology for this year's Indianapolis 500 (SportsTicker, 4/10).

The AP reports that the Pilot Pen tennis tournament "will fill 12½ hours of national broadcast time this summer." CBS Sports "will air the singles final live" on August 24, and ESPN2 "will broadcast 10½ hours of early-round through semifinal action" (AP, 4/10).

Flames RW Jarome Iginla earned the Ralph Scurfield Humanitarian Award, which is granted each year to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, determination and leadership on the ice (THE DAILY).

The AP reports that a wave of violence "forced Colombia to withdraw as host of the South American Games, a regional sports competition set for May." The South American Sports Organization "will meet April 18 in Paraguay to select a new host for the multisport event" (AP, 4/10).

Lions DT Luther Elliss will be honored by the UT Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College HOF at a banquet at the UT Valley St. College's McKay Events Center (THE DAILY).

New Balance will preview its Pink Ribbon Shoe Collection at a N.Y. showroom. Proceeds from the line will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (BRANDWEEK.com, 4/10).

Sears, Roebuck and Co. today estimated that Q1 profits "will beat the Wall Street consensus forecast by more than 50 percent, as savings from job cuts and other restructuring activities increased earnings at its retail business" (REUTERS, 4/10). Meanwhile, the AP reports that an "upbeat earnings outlook from Sears, Roebuck helped stocks move higher Wednesday, and raised investors' optimism about an overall business turnaround" (AP, 4/10).

REUTERS reports that Sony Pictures Entertainment, "needing less studio space due to recent cutbacks in TV production, is trying to sell its historic Culver City lot" (REUTERS, 4/10).
