CALLAWAY TAKES A SWING AT JUNIOR GOLF SPONSORSHIP

The SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE reports that the San Diego County Junior Golf Association will announce today that Carlsbad-based Callaway Golf "has agreed to be the title sponsor for the next three years" of the Junior World event. It is "an unprecedented move" for both parties, as the 35-year-old event "has never had a true corporate title sponsor and Callaway has never put its name on a junior golf event" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 3/22).


CARLSBERG BECOMES OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF EURO 2004

The London GUARDIAN reports that Carlsberg-Tetley "has become the first official sponsor of the 2004 European football championships in Portugal." The deal means Carlsberg will be the official beer at Euro 2004 and 2008 (London GUARDIAN, 3/22).


PERRY ELLIS TAKES SWIMSUIT PLUNGE WITH JANTZEN ACQUISITION

Perry Ellis International has completed the acquisition of certain assets of Jantzen Inc. from VF Corp. The Jantzen acquisition will represent about 20% of Perry Ellis International's revenues, and marks the company's first entry into the women's and swimwear markets (THE DAILY).

Meanwhile, the MIAMI HERALD reports that Jantzen's '01 revenues "were second only to Speedo" in women's swimwear, but VF Corp. "decided in November to sell off Jantzen as part of a larger corporate restructuring designed to focus on its core brands: Wrangler, Lee and North Face." In addition to its own line, Jantzen also produces Nike and Tommy Hilfiger swimwear (MIAMI HERALD, 3/22).


ITV DIGITAL ON THE BRINK AFTER SOCCER DEAL REJECTED

The FINANCIAL TIMES reports that ITV Digital "moved a step closer to collapse [Thursday] after a last-ditch attempt to reduce the cost of its TV rights contract with the Football League was rejected." The owners of ITV Digital, the pay-TV platform that has been the "limping rival" to Rupert Murdoch's British Sky Broadcasting, are said to be "emotionally prepared" to close it down. ITV Digital execs will give the football league the weekend the "accept its revised [$71M] offer" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 3/22).


BUZZER BEATERS

Babolot extended its contract with Andy Roddick until '05. Roddick initially signed with the company in '99 and has played the Pure Drive racquet ever since (THE DAILY).

Raptors G Vince Carter "will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in Toronto" next week and will miss the rest of the season (AP, 3/22).

HiTEX! Enterprises – the Football Writers Association of America's marketing partner for several college football postseason awards, including the Outland trophy – has named Dallas-based Momentum Sports Marketing as its exclusive agency of record (THE DAILY).

Youbet.com formally announced that company co-Founder David Marshall has returned to serve as Chair & CEO (THE DAILY).

On Monday, golfdigest.com and golfworld.com reached a single-day all-time record of 122,000 page views, almost a 68% increase from February's daily totals (THE DAILY).

Asian sports broadcaster ESPN STAR Sports has secured full coverage cable and satellite rights to the Rugby World Cup, which takes place October-November '03. The net will broadcast all 48 matches with daily and weekly highlights, plus a preview show (THE DAILY).

USA TODAY reports, "Spurred by a wide-open competition, studios have mounted aggressive campaigns" for this year's Oscars race, "spending a record $50 million in marketing for virtually every top race, from best picture to actor to director" (USA TODAY, 3/22).

Friday

Rangers, Islanders and Devils alumni will participate in the Alumni Celebrity All Stars' "Heroes in Uniforms" celebrity hockey tournament and dinner at Pier Sixty on Chelsea Piers in N.Y. Cocktails begin at 7:00pm ET, with dinner served at 8:00pm ET (THE DAILY).
