GOT MILK? BOZELL MAKES SURE RIGHT QB SPORTS MUSTACHE

By Terry Lefton, Editor-at-Large, The Sports Business Daily

The milk mustache print ad that appears in newspapers the day after the Super Bowl has become almost as institutionalized as the post-game "I'm going to Disney World" TV spot. This year, however, there was a bit of a problem. Customarily, Bozell, the agency for the National Fluid Milk Processors Promotion Board (a dairy consortium), has photo shoots with the starting and winning quarterbacks of the AFC and NFC championship games, in order to have one ready to run the day after the Super Bowl. However, considering the Patriots' QB controversy, the agency wasn't sure whether to photograph Tom Brady or Drew Bledsoe. The solution? Frank Vuono, a partner at Rutherford, NJ-based 16W Marketing, which arranges the shoots: "We shot three quarterbacks this year for the first time. We just had to prepare all eventualities" (THE DAILY).

WHITE HOUSE TARGETS TERRORISM IN UNPRECEDENTED MEDIA BUY

POLL SUGGESTS PUBLIC SUPPORT OF HOSTING OLYMPICS IN N.Y.

Officials at NYC2012 on Tuesday released results of a poll conducted by KRC Research and Consulting of 1,220 city and state residents between November 27 and December 5, 2001, showing an "unusually high public support" for hosting the Olympic Games in N.Y. (NYC2012). NEWSDAY reports that the survey "cited 84 percent of city residents and 78 percent of state residents in favor of New York hosting the Olympics, and found 13 percent from the city, and 16 percent statewide, opposed." The rest did not express an opinion (NEWSDAY, 1/30).

ATHOC 2004 LURES OLYMPIC VOLUNTEERS WITH CONCERT

The FINANCIAL TIMES reported that ATHOC 2004, organizer of the '04 Summer Games in Athens, will stage a concert today "aimed at persuading Greeks to sign up as volunteer workers for the games." Two popular Greek singers, Alkistis Protopsaltis and Mario Frangoulis, will participate, along with Dionysios Savopoulos, known as "the Greek Bob Dylan." More than 60,000 volunteers will be needed "to make the games a success, but only 32,000 have so far expressed interest" (FINANCIAL TIMES, 1/28).

REEBOK POSTS Q4 LOSSES DESPITE RISE IN APPAREL SALES

Canton, MA-based Reebok International today reported an 18% drop in Q4 net income and "warned that profit growth this year may be lower than its long-term goal" of 15%. Reebok posted net income of $5.1M, or $0.09 a share, for Q4, compared with $6.2M, or $0.11 a share, in the same quarter one year ago. The company said that U.S. footwear sales "dropped in a tough retail environment, but U.S. apparel sales rose sharply, boosted by licensing deals" with the NBA and NFL (REUTERS, 1/30).

Reebok's stock was trading at $29.25, up 2.88%, in late afternoon trading (THE DAILY).

The DETROIT NEWS quotes Wizards F Michael Jordan, who routinely skips the Friday of All-Star weekend despite the mandatory $10,000 fine: "Absolutely I am going to skip it again. I don't think we should be exposed to the media two days back-to-back. Friday is media day, and then we see the media again Saturday for practice. Tell me, what happens between that time frame? Nothing. So I won't be there Friday, and I look forward to answering questions on Saturday" (DETROIT NEWS, 1/30).

The AP reported that PGA Tour rookie Ty Tryon "has quite a posse around him," including two swing coaches, a caddie, a tutor and a yoga instructor, but it's "not a traveling circus." Tryon: "People think I have a tour bus going around, following me, like I have my car and a bus full of people behind me. … I couldn't afford to put them up where I was staying" (AP, 1/29).
