GRAY'S ROUNDTABLE TO PICK COLLECTIVE BRAINS OF NFL HOSTS

The L.A. TIMES reports that CBS Radio/Westwood sports reporter Jim Gray "will moderate a roundtable discussion among five broadcasters who have served as hosts of over-the-air television network NFL pregame shows."  The broadcasters will be "current hosts Jim Nantz of CBS and James Brown of Fox, plus former hosts Brent Musburger, Bob Costas and Greg Gumbel."  Gray will tape the segment today and air it on "both the pregame show and halftime" radio broadcast of tonight's "MNF" contest (L.A. TIMES, 12/17).


HAMM, FIGO NAMED FIFA'S PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

The AP reports that U.S. women's team and Freedom F Mia Hamm "was honored Monday as FIFA's best player of the year, the first time the soccer organization has given such an award to a woman."  Luis Figo, who stars for Real Madrid, "received the men's FIFA World Player of the Year award, the first Portuguese to win the honor" (AP, 12/17).


SALT LAKE JUDGE PROMISES TO GO EASY ON OLYMPIC REVELERS

The SALT LAKE TRIBUNE reports that UT's Third District Judge Pat Brian "will let his Olympic spirit shine when he bangs his gavel" during the '02 Winter Games.  Brian said, "I'm probably going to dispense more mercy than justice to our national and international guests.  We want them to enjoy our hospitality.  We want people to have a good time."  Brian added, "[We understand] there will be a few revelers along the way.  But unless they are really tearing the town apart, we will be very patient and very lenient" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 12/17).

BUZZER BEATERS

The Redskins announced today that CB Darrell Green has reversed his retirement decision and will return for an unprecedented 20th season (THE DAILY).

AOL Time Warner announced today that it "will join in sponsoring the Toyota Motor Corporation's F-1 racing team."  Toyota's new F-1 car, which "made its world-premiere debut today, displays AOL Time Warner's corporate logo on both sides of the car's barge board; the logo will also be included in Toyota's F-1 promotional materials" (THE DAILY).

Peter Jacobson Productions has signed LPGA Tour pro Mhairi McKay to a player representation contract.  McKay recently finished 20th on the LPGA money list in her third year on the tour (THE DAILY).

The AP reports that a judge ruled Monday in a sex-bias case that "high school sports for girls in Michigan must operate on the same schedule as boys sports."  Michigan is one of only a few states "in which high school girls play basketball in the fall and volleyball in the winter, the opposite of the seasons traditionally used by colleges" (AP, 12/17).

The AP reports that NFL officials will review "all aspects of the bottle-throwing melee by Cleveland fans" following Sunday's Browns-Jaguars game, but they "will not … take action against the Browns' owner and president [Al Lerner and Carmen Policy] for statements that failed to criticize the fans' actions." (AP, 12/17).

REUTERS reports that Tiger Woods earned "the Player of the Year award from the Golf Writers Association of America," announced this weekend (REUTERS, 12/17).

The Ft. Myers NEWS-PRESS reports that actor Jack Wagner won the Dodge Celebrity Invitational with a 2-under par on Sunday at Miromar Beach and Golf Club in Ft. Myers, FL (Ft. Myers NEWS-PRESS, 12/17).


 TONIGHT'S EVENTS

The PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER reported that the "long-awaited" ESPN Classic SportsCentury documentary on NHL Rangers C Eric Lindros will be televised tonight at 8:00pm ET.  The program "will explore Lindros' relationship with his parents, his feud with general manager Bob Clarke, and his long and complicated injury history" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 12/16).

REUTERS reports that the world's "first completely made-in-space television commercial" will be aired in Japan beginning January 1.  The commercial, for Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co.'s "Pocari Sweat" drink, features "a Russian astronaut picking up a floating bottle of [the] Japanese sports drink and gulping it down while looking at Earth from the International Space Station" (REUTERS, 12/17).

NBC on Monday said it "would buy San Francisco-area television station KNTV from Granite Broadcasting Corp. for $230 million to expand in the nation's fifth-biggest local TV market."  NBC plans to "aggressively promote its Olympics coverage and prime-time schedule in the San Francisco area, which is home to seventh-largest Hispanic community in the United States" (REUTERS, 12/17).

The HOLLYWOOD REPORTER writes that Robert Altman's "Gosford Park," and Ridley Scott's "Black Hawk Down," each drew "five nominations in the first American Film Institute Awards, announced in Los Angeles this morning."  Eight other films were nominated for AFI movie of the year, including "A Beautiful Mind"; "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"; USA Films' "The Man Who Wasn't There" and DreamWorks' "Shrek" (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 12/17).
