VIKINGS TO RETIRE STRINGER’S JERSEY AT HALFTIME CEREMONY

The ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS reports that at halftime of tonight’s "MNF" game between the Vikings and Giants, Korey Stringer "will be remembered when his No. 77 is retired." Vikings Owner Red McCombs "is scheduled to present Stringer's wife, Kelci, with her husband's jersey." People attending the game at the Metrodome "may want to pay close attention to the interaction between McCombs and Kelci Stringer and look for any signs of uneasiness," since Stringer "is suing McCombs and the Vikings, claiming they didn't properly care for her husband in the hours before his death" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 11/19).


NBA, WNBA AGREE TO OVER-THE-AIR CONTRACT WITH GREECE TV

The NBA and the WNBA have entered a multi-year, multi-platform TV agreement with Alpha TV, one of Greece’s leading broadcasters. The free over-the-air channel will broadcast NBA’s ’02 All-Star Game, the ’02 NBA Finals, and "NBA Action," a weekly highlights show. Polis TV, also a free over-the-air channel, will feature weekly NBA games throughout the season (THE DAILY).


WORLD SERIES’ WEB BROADCASTS DREW SOPHISTICATED LISTENERS

Arbitron’s Webcast Audience Profiles revealed today that people who tuned into MLB.com for the World Series, October 27 to November 4, were well-educated and active online. Arbitron’s profile indicated that 31% of the online listeners to World Series games live in homes with annual incomes greater than $100,000, and 82% had completed college and/or attained a post-graduate degree, compared to 21% of the U.S. population who have obtained the same level of education (THE DAILY).


OLYMPIC SITES LAUNCHED IN CONJUCTION WITH TORCH LIGHTING

The SLOC, NBC, MSNBC.com and the MSN Network announced today the launch of two Web sites, Olympics.com and NBCOlympics.com, which coincide with the lighting of the Olympic Torch in Olympia, Greece. The sites, which are being produced by MSNBC.com, represent the largest event website ever designed in sports history (THE DAILY).


SPORTS MANAGEMENT FIRM AR SPORTS PICKED UP BY OCTAGON

Octagon announced today the acquisition of Atlanta-based professional sports management firm AR Sports. Founder Ray Anderson will assume the role of Dir of Coaches Division, while Ken Landphere will serve as Assistant Director. Octagon’s Football Division will continue to be led by Mike Sullivan, Jeff Sperbeck, Andre Colona and Doug Hendrickson (THE DAILY).

WORLD CUP TEAM’S PRAYERS FOR SNOW FINALLY ANSWERED

The ASPEN TIMES reports that Aspen’s World Cup Chief of Racing Jimmy Hancock was thankful to see snow fall on local mountains as his team "scrambl(ed) to prepare for three men’s races beginning Saturday." Hancock: "Obviously, we’re a little more encouraged at the moment. It’s clearly helping — it’s snowing hard, and I’m sure it’s adding up to some degree. But we’re still hoping for colder temperatures" (ASPEN TIMES, 11/19).


BUZZER BEATERS

Sunday’s Napa 500 from the Atlanta Motor Speedway on NBC earned a 4.0/9 overnight Nielsen rating, a 100% increase over last year’s 2.0 national rating on ESPN. The rating peaked with a 5.0 in the final half hour of the race (THE DAILY).

Skechers USA announced today that the company will be opening its N.Y. corporate offices and relocating its N.Y. showroom to a new location on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on November 27, tripling its presentation space (THE DAILY).

REUTERS reports that Boris Becker is under investigation in his native Germany for tax evasion. Becker was suspected of having used an address in Monaco to escape tax payments from ’85 to ’93 (REUTERS, 11/19).

The AP Sports Editors’ Northeast Region Fall Meeting will be held December 3-4 at the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA (THE DAILY).


TONIGHT’S EVENTS

Member of the Viking Women’s Organization will collect nonperishable food items prior to tonight’s game against the NFL Giants at the Metrodome (THE DAILY).

The MOBILE REGISTER reports that ESPN’s Rece Davis, a native of Muscle Shoals, AL, "will be the featured speaker at the ALLTEL 1st and 10 Club tonight at the Mitchell Center on the University of South Alabama campus" (MOBILE REGISTER, 11/19).

Phillies Manager Larry Bowa will be named the March of Dimes’ Coach/Manager of the Year for ’01 tonight at the 17th Annual March of Dimes Sports Awards Banquet at the Regency Palace in Mount Laurel, NJ (THE DAILY).


IN OTHER NEWS……

The AP reports Former Commerce Secretary William Daley has been named President of SBC Communications. In his new role, Daley "will be responsible for strategic planning, regulatory matters, external affairs and international affairs." Daley will assume his new position on December 1 (AP, 11/19).

The AP reports Alcoa Inc. "will slash 6,500 jobs and close one plant in Pennsylvania and five others in Europe." The cuts "represent about 4.6 percent of Alcoa’s worldwide work force … and will be made at 40 locations" (AP, 11/19).

The AP reports that Latin American Internet company StarMedia Network Inc. "shook up its executive ranks Monday and said it would restate earnings for an 18-month period ending last June 30." StarMedia’s CFO resigned while the company’s General Counsel was fired. Susan Segal was named acting Chair for the company. StarMedia had its trading "halted on the Nasdaq," with shares closing at $0.38 after being as high as $70.00 in July of ’99 (AP, 11/19).
