AOL TIME WARNER INKS DEAL ALLOWING BROADCASTS IN CHINA

The AP reports that AOL Time Warner "announced a landmark deal Monday that will make it the first foreign television broadcaster in China." AOL Time Warner said that "broadcasts of its Chinese-language CETV channel would begin next year on cable systems" in southeast China. The deal also calls for Time Warner to carry China’s official English-language channel on AOL Time Warner U.S. cable systems. (AP, 10/22).


JOHN DEERE NAMED PRESENTING SPONSOR OF BREEDERS’ CUP TURF

The NTRA and Breeders’ Cup Ltd. announced today that John Deere has become a presenting sponsor of the $2M Breeders’ Cup Turf, which will be held this Saturday at Belmont Park in N.Y. John Deere joins IL-based health and beauty company Alberto-Culver in the presenting sponsor category (THE DAILY).


FOX TEAMS UP WITH EBAY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR TERRORIST VICTIMS

News Corp.’s Fox Entertainment Group has partnered with eBay to raise funds for the victims of September 11 as part of eBay’s "Auction for America." Fox will make available over 100 items from its film, sports, broadcasting and cable divisions. Items to be auctioned include walk-on parts on TV shows and signed NFL footballs from the hosts of "NFL on Fox" pregame show (THE DAILY).


MLB ANNOUNCES DIVERSITY BUSINESS PARTNERS PROGRAM

MLB announced today a new phase in its Diverse Business Partners (DBP) program, which seeks to cultivate partnerships with minority and women-owned businesses. MLB has created a telephone hotline and Web link for DBP information, as well as a bank of DBP vendors that will be made available to all clubs. Additionally, MLB has retained Chicago-based Ralph G. Moore & Associates to help establish the program (THE DAILY).


HELPING HANDS

The auction of custom-made NHL Rangers and Sabres sweaters from the teams’ October 7 game raised $215,000 for the Twin Towers Fund. The top selling sweaters were Mark Messier ($20,010) Brian Leetch ($15,010) and Mike Richter ($15,010) (THE DAILY).


TONIGHT’S EVENTS

Danny Schayes will be inducted into the Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony at Drumlins Country Club at 8:00pm ET (Syracuse POST-STANDARD, 10/22).


BUZZER BEATERS

The Bears officially announced today that they will play their home games in ‘02 at Memorial Stadium on the campus of the Univ. of IL in Urbana-Champaign while Soldier Field is being renovated (SPORTSTICKER, 10/22).

The CHICAGO SUN-TIMES reports Ted Turner will "show up in a cameo" in the film "Gods and Generals," the sequel to ’93’s "Gettysburg." Turner, who is "ponying up cash for the film," plays Col. Walter T. Patton, who was the great-uncle of Gen. George S. Patton (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 10/22).

It was announced today that the ‘04 Paralympics will be September 17-28 in Athens, following the August 13-29 Olympics (AP, 10/22).

German soccer teams Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich received "overwhelming approval from the city's voters to build a new stadium" in time to host the ‘06 World Cup opener. The teams received 66% of the vote Sunday in a referendum that allows them to build the $193M facility (AP, 10/22).
